Larger sensors
Posted by James Mulryan on April 7, 2010 at 10:26 pmDoes anyone know when Panasonic is going to challenge Arri, Red and Sony with a big sensor? Seems like they are getting way behind on this curve, maybe they have no intention of competing in that market?

April 7, 2010 at 10:30 pmWho knows- I’ve been hoping to see larger sensors from Panny but so far they seem pretty set on 1/3″ and 2/3″. Now those are awesome sensors and they’re excellent for that market segment but I for one am hoping they will move forward on bigger sensors to compete. Perhaps they have that in the works but it’s taking a while to do the job right.

April 8, 2010 at 12:46 amIt should be easy for Panasonic…just copy the Arri Alexa and make it half the price. Voila..the new Varicam!

April 8, 2010 at 3:45 pmWell it is and it isn’t though. Sure they can put HD video on a still camera with a huge sensor, but the compromise is ergonomics, iffy compression, no pro audio hookups, poor monitoring, etc. And they haven’t been able to spin that big image sensor into a professional or even prosumer video camera.
They just unveiled a bunch of solid state CF card cameras with 1/3″ sensors shooting to MPEG2 of all things. https://www.asahi.com/english/TKY201004080309.html That seems like a huge step sideways.
I’m still waiting for that progeny of an XL2S body with a 5D Mark II chip. But anyways this is getting outside of the original topic.
Bottom line is- please Panasonic give us a FF35 sensor camera. 🙂

April 9, 2010 at 2:42 pmNext week, prosumer level, maybe 2/3″, maybe larger, using AVCHD and SD cards. Not sure about a high-end large sensor camera, but I do expect AVC-Ultra to be launched.

April 10, 2010 at 12:56 amI’d rather see onboard ProRes HQ/4444 and CF card options. If we’re not going to leap forward on sensors- maybe we could instead simplify workflow and reduce media costs. Though I guess we already have that option with 3rd party gear like KiPro.
AVC-intra is already more than enough for 1920×1080. i.e. it’s looking as good as I’d ever expect HD to look from a 1/3″ or 2/3″ camera. Heck I was already satisfied with DVCPROHD…

April 11, 2010 at 10:52 pmThis will kill DSLRs. Can’t wait to see who comes up with a shoulder mount camera like this first.
