Large Timeline Crashing in Premiere Pro 1.5

I am half way through a long documentary project. I recently combined four rough chapters I cut in Premiere 6.5 into one PP1.5 timeline. The .project file is just 58 megs but the draft timeline is 6 hours long. PP1.5 hangs so frequently as to be unusable.

I have read through many of the threads and understand PP, of any stripe, does not manage memory well.

I am hoping you can suggest some work-arounds tailored to my circumstances.

    My edit box:

    Intel dual core
    XP 32 with SP3
    4 gigs of 800mHz memory

My uncompressed DV footage resides on SATA drives with extra on outboard USB Lacie drives.

This arrangement worked flawlessly with Premiere 6.5. I “upgraded” to PP1.5 for the over 2-hour timeline. No luck.

Where do I go from here?

I do have the option of upgrading to XP 64 (despite having to ask M$’s permission each time I install it.) Some opinions suggest this helps even though XP 64 isn’t officially supported by Adobe.
Can PP1.5 actually use the extra memory resources?

I am ignorant of hardware acceleration, though this comes up frequently as a big help. I am rue to throw more money at a problem I thought I’d already solved by buying up. I don’t have any more budget beyond a lucky Ebay purchase anyway. If any of you think this may help, please suggest something last generation that might suit my antiquated set up and budget.

I am not a professional editor so my ‘work flow’ may very well be a source of grief. I need the large chunks of the project together now so I can see the big picture. Working in small chapters doesn’t seem viable at this juncture.

Should I use low rez source clips? I am editing full resolution AVI files right now.

I have also considered slowly importing the chapters into a master timeline scene by scene but my bins get duplicated and re-duplicated and the file structure gets nightmarish. If I trim the whole project, I lose the option of easily changing my mind and the edits. Have I overlooked some technique or tool?

Any insights would be deeply appreciated as I am dead in the water.

    Cheers,

    Bresh.
