  • Large raster mp4s?

I’m doing some video work for a games expo and I have created content for two 2×3 2160×5760 video walls. The client asked for all the files to be in a h.264 mp4 format. However I can’t seem to export out of AE or Media Encoder at those sizes, I always get an error.
I found a 4K preset that works for my 4K footage but what can I do about the video walls?

They are short clips, about 10s-15s each and will be played off of Dell T3600s equipped with dual Nvidia Quadro K5000 cards treating the 6 screens as one 2160×5760 super screen.

Is it even possible to do a h.264 format or should I tell them that’s a no go and use something more accommodating to larger raster sizes?

Also if anyone can suggest a good bit rate to encode at I would appreciate it. Those Dells should be able to handle a lot but I don’t have a specific number in mind.

    My specs:
    Mac Pro
2×2.4 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon
    20 GB 1066 Mhz DDR 3 Ram
    ATI Radeon HD 5770

Think I answered my own question with some snooping: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264/MPEG-4_AVC#Levels
(The answer is h264 has a max size of 4,096 x 2304 incase someone stumbles on this.)

These references may provide some answers –

    or google for ‘h264 limits’.

Think 2160×5760 is beyond the limits of h264 (particularly the vertical resolution). Your best bet may be to provide pre-split files, and use a media player that can play them back in sync. This would also ease the decoding of the videos by the Dell (if i’m not worng, initial decoding is handled by the cpu before passing over to the gpu).

Another alternative may be to scale down the rendered resolution, and let the player scale the file up to fit the 2×3.

    good luck,
