  • Large multi-screen event – bouncing between Premiere and After Effects question

This is my first time posting in this forum and am coming from FCP 7, so a bit new to working with Premiere. Here is my situation:

I’ve got to put together all the media for a 2.5 hour event that will be displayed across 8 very large screens. The event company that will be running the media is providing me an AE template that has all the screens comped together into one large canvas so I can see how the images play against each other. Now the idea is to take advantage of the setup and have the screens interact with each other. For example a person starting in one screen would walk “through” the screens on the left and another would walk through the screens on the right and then meet in the center screen. So timing for this is critical. Also, the event will be able to playback 5.1 surround sound so I’ll have a mix made along with color correction. Which leads to my Premiere Pro / After Effects question.

Is it possible to build a cut sequence in Premiere and import it into After Effects as a comp? And if it is possible, if I make adjustments to the sequence in Premiere will it auto update inside After Effects? I know that Premiere will import AE projects and will auto update if changes are made to the AE project, but is the reverse true? What I need to deliver to the event company is discrete video files for each screen and being able to cut in a dedicated editor that can export an EDL and audio tracks for color correction and audio mix is crucial. AE is basically my way of seeing all the screens interact together and to create any global transitions that need to be affected across all the screens.

    Thanks in advance,
    Jamie Pickell

When you import an Premiere pro sequence into AE as a composition you cannot go back and make changes in Premiere and have them update in AE. (To do it this way go file->import->Adobe Premiere Pro Project)

AE can however import a Premeire timeline as a single clip, that way it can be updated in premiere and changes will show up in AE, obviously you don’t have any control in AE over anything in the timeline though. (To do it this way go file->import->file, then choose the sequence(s) to import).

Thank you Nevin for your reply. I just tested what you said… AWESOME! I was envisioning a headache beyond the one I’m already going to have. Thank you!
