When I arrange the icons, sometimes one space is skipped before the next icon is placed. I’ll end up with a checkerboard display rather than a continuous arrangement. Why is this, and is there a solution?

Make sure your playhead is at the end of the last clip. The next clip will line up with the playhead.

I was talking about working in the large icon view in the bins. Not on the timeline. Sometimes, it leaves a gap between clips.

Try to use the “arrange” clips command while the bin is selected. I’m not in front of the computer now but it should be in the “view” menu. That will line the clips up in rows. Be sure to enlarge your clip window before doing so. Unfortunately this part of FCP is annoying. In addition FCP will order the clips either by duration or name when it re-displays the clips. I’ve been waiting for the chance to display via timecode…
    Hope this helps
