Large Composition Crashing – Recommended Settings
I’m trying to render out a jpeg sequence of a 4508 x 290 composition. There are a lot of layers and masks/roto, lens flares. I haven’t been able to get through a render without crashing. Anyone have any suggestions for memory/cache settings? I’m already using the secret pref to purge after each frame. Just trying to see if I’m missing anything, before I go in and start pre-rendering elements to get through this render.

If you’re using multiprocessing with 8 cores and 16 GB of RAM, you might consider limiting the number of CPUs available to After Effects (see “CPUs to leave for other applications” on this page). This will help you avoid starving your processors of memory.
Also, I usually render to image sequences; if the render fails for any reason, you can re-render the image sequence with the “Skip existing frames” option to pick up where you left off.

Installed the update, turned off open gl, and reduced cpu’s to AE. Left the render going overnight and will post best results/settings. Should I have enable layer cache and multiprocessing switched on? I do now.

So I implemented all of the suggestions from Dave and Walter, and I also tried rendering as a TIFF sequence as opposed to JPEG, based on a suggestion from Mylenium over at the Adobe forums (https://forums.adobe.com/message/2697994#2697994). Render still crashed after about 40 frames. I’ve bitten the bullet and started pre-rendering out my pre-comps in hopes that AE can handle it better now. Thanks for all the suggestions.
