    Hi, all —

I’m considering a new laptop for home and would like to be able to run Premiere Pro and AfterEffects on it. I’ve seen reasonable prices for the following two laptops. Does anyone know anything about either of them, or does anyone have any opinions about either?

Neither is equipped with 7200 RPM Drives, but I do have external firewire 7200 RPM drives I can use.

    Any input is welcome.

    Laptop 1: HP Pavillion zd8220us
    P4, 3 GHz HT
    512 MB Ram
ATI Mobility Radeon X600 Video Chipset
80 GB Hard Drive (4200 RPM)
    17″ WXGA (up to 1440 X 900)
    XP Media Center

    Laptop 2: Toshiba Satellite P35-S605
    Pentium M HT 3.46 GHz
    512 MB Ram
ATI Mobility Radeon X600 Video Chipset
100 GB Hard Drive (5200 RPM)
    17″ WXGA monitor (Up to 1440 x 900)
    XP Home

    Thanks!

    Hi Dex,

I currently use a Toshiba p25-s520 (3 GHz HT p4) and it works great. No locking up, no weird driver issues (not counting the initial SP2 fiasco.)

Just from the specs listed I would go with the Toshiba because of the 5400rpm drive. If you decide to place your conformed audio files on the C drive it will be a noticeable jump in performance when editing.

Neither one will work very well because of the 512 memory. You need minimum 1gig or go to 2gb. Of the two the HP is the best because it is a true P4 and not an “M”
The speed of the drives is not a factor because you shouldn’t be capturing, storing or playing back from the system drive at all.
I just bought an HP NX9600 with 100gb drive, 17″ monitor, 2gb memory and a 3.6 P4 processor. It has no problems with anything including 3DS Max, Combustion and Premiere.

I am using an HP zx5000, 1GB RAM, with a Lacie 250GB FW/USB drive and have no problems editing with PPro.

I dont have experience with the Pent. M. I have read here that they erform great with a good battery life. My Pent 4 is 2 years old now and I love it from a performance perspective. Up your ram if you can. I have a gig and wish I had more. My specs should follow the signature.

Thanks, everyone, for the input. I finally wound up deciding to get a Dell Inspiron with a helluvalotta horsepower. It’s more money than I wanted to spend, but I figure, I’ll be using this thing for a long time, so better to spend the money now and be happy than scrimp and be complaining.

The new computer should arrive next week.

    Happy editing everyone!
