I admire your courage and conviction, theres times when every editor is forced to work out of his/her comfort zone, to make a living, establish a name, gain more experience, or whatever but we all have our own private utopia. The place where we want to edit, with the material we want to edit with.

Grinner, ole buddy,

I know exactly where you are coming from. The day I slowed down was when my youngest daughter went to her mother and asked, “Mommy, are we ever gonna see daddy anymore?”
I tell you that tears your heart out. I cut hours, and changed my shifts so I could see more of the family at night. Now after they were all grown and out of teh house I went back to more hours, but never as many as I was working before.

I love ya guy, hang in there, I hope beyond hope that your dream becomes a reality. Take time to enjoy those gorgeous kids of yours.

Way to go man. As everyone said, I think it’s about a moment that comes in everybody’s life and not only editors. I’m glad you could see that moment. Many just seem to fail seizing it.

Wow, my man I feel your emotion…

But here is a point of view to consider, what if you are successful with your venture, as i suspect you will be, you may find yourself back where you started with new challenges, deadlines and potentially new clients from the additional exposure. What if you kept your current client roster and bring on another editor, let this new guy ease in as you ease out a bit. Meetings with established clients to define new projects and budgets are realitively short and can be easily managed. This could be a solid base to grow your business and in time with the right “hire” you could really concentrate on your personal soup to nuts productions while you are bringing money in from your bread and butter…

A One man band operation can be a tough balance and not the healithiest approach once you are established.

Take a breath, stand back, and look at the big picture…\

Well said Grinner. I’ve found myself in the same boat recently. I absolutely love editing, but have been yearning to Direct more and create my own work.

To that end, we’re finishing up my first short film and have two original series in the works. There is definitely something liberating about doing a project just because you want to, not because you have to. As with you, I just have to try this and see where it goes.

I wish you the very best of luck as you pursue your dreams and after reading your posts through the years, I’m sure we’ll be reading about your success very soon.
