I have 2 Lacie 4big Quadras (with built in Raid cards) each raided internally in Raid 5, then software striped together in an 8TB Raid 50 configuration. They have been in this configuration for about 18 months. After a system restart the Raid did not come back up. In Disk Utility one of the raids is indicated to have failed, however the physical Raid set show no sign of failure. (Big Blu “Hal” light stays blue instead of red. All the drives can be heard spinning up and dismounting properly). I took off the esata cables and tried FW800 with the same result, I also tried it on my MBP and it showed both sets as being there but no drive mounted on the desktop.

The oddest thing about this is; if the individual units are brought up singly, neither one show up with a “failed” configuration, it is only when both are mounted together will one show up as failed. I conclude that some data necessary for the setup of the Raid has been corrupted, does anybody have a different theory, or maybe even a solution that doesn’t involve me loosing all the data. If I do loose the data it’s not the end of the world, I live in a 90% tapeless workflow and all my card backups are on other drives. I have tried swapping cables, and power supplies with no change.

I want to thank the Herd in advance for coming up with a solution to my problem that doesn’t involve pain or data loss, I know I can count on you!

Have you tried running Disk Warrior? It works with some RAID configurations, but not others, and I have no idea if your Lacie is one of those it will cure, but it’s worth a try. DW has no deleterious effects on my CalDigit RAID 5.

    David,
Thanks for your reply. Disk Warrior does not recognize the drives either as a Raid or individually.I should have mentioned that in my original post.

    Hi Don,
No much to suggest you, but I would try two things:
    – Try on another Mac.
    – Try on a PC. With the help of a PC I’ve been able to resurrect failed Mac drives.
