the porsche ones are scary . i have two but havent had many issues with them at all. the d2’s are fare more rugged.

maxtors scream like car tires burning rubber.

i just bought 2 western digital 250 gig drives, usb2.0 format only for 100 bucks each, for the cost, just buy what you think is going to work, and when it gives, replace it…..just pray it doesnt happen during a project. backup, log correcly, and keep your project files in a few places!

oh, and try not to stack your drives, especially lacie porche drives, they make enough heat to cook eggs.

we have a couple of lacie drives and we havnt had any issues with them…yet. just from the buzz on the boards the porche ones especially sound like accidents waiting to happen!!

I’ll remember the lacies if i want to cook up some eggs – nice tip 🙂

I have 2 Lacie drives and haven’t had any problems…. but I’ve had two maxtor drives that went bad. One was bad out of the box. Another squeeked and eventually failed. Both had to be replaced. Now I only use Lacie drives. When Your life is going to depend on it, I wouldn’t choose Maxtor. Yeah, you might save a few bucks with Maxtor, but if you get a good Lacie, it will last a while. In the end… hard drives fail. COUNT ON IT. Good luck with everything.

Go buy a FW external inclosure and add your own drives. If you want the best buy Hitachi, they will keep you crankin. Just remember to reformat/ defragment them between jobs.

I have Weibetech, and Granite Digital, but my CompUSA external FW400 enclosure with a CompUSA removable HD Hot swap carrier was by far the best price and it is hanging in there. $80 bucks plus drive.

    Hello,
For video editing, we are recommending the d2/Big Disk hard drives. They feature 3 interfaces and a heat dissipating aluminum chassis. You could also look at our new SATA II product: LaCie Two Big

The complaints about Porsche drives usually come from users who do not reformat them for Mac (drives come formatted as FAT32). They are great drives for data backup or simple storage.

    Hope this helps.
    Mat @ LaCie.
