I opened a brand spankin’ new Lacie D2 500gig drive today. First things first, I plug in the drive using the FW800 connection,, wait a second,, there it is on the desk top, I open up disk utility and re-format the drive for a fresh slate (extended – not journaled)

the icon dissapears,, then pop! a new icon shows up with the new name I gave the drive.. All is great. I eject the disk and go about what I was doing.

When I later plug in the drive,, nothing,, it wont mount,, no icon,, doesnt show up in disk utility. On the Lacie sites FAQ it lists a similar problem, and states to repair permissions on the boot drive,, so I do this,, still wont show up.

    hum… might be a cable?!?
was using the FW800 cable, so I try the USB port… nope..
then the FW400 cable,, wait,, whats this,, there it is on the desk top!
well,, I start to question whether I formatted the drive correctly…. Ive done this a thousand times before ,, its not a complicated prossess,, but hey,, lets stripe this drive again for good measure… just in case..

so back to disk utility,, I select the drive,, click erase,,n nope,, now I get a communication error. it wont let me erase/partition the drive.. get an error message each time.

I try to use the other connections,, the disk will only mount using the FW400 cable,, but wont let me do anything to it…

    This sound familiar to anyone???

Sounds like a bad unit or possibly a static electric charge when you re-connected it. Brand new drive, return it for a replacement.

[Colin McQ] ” this one has thrown me for a loop though..”

Everybody makes bad units. I returned a $16,000 Fibre Channel array after one week. I returned three $3,500 SATA arrays after a few weeks. Had a bad USB 2.0 drive right out of the box, returned it.

It happens to everyone and especially if it happens right away, don’t even think about it, just return the unit and have it replaced.

    i agree, return it.

however, are you using the brand new power cable with it? I tried using an old cable, with a new drive the other day, and it acted all funky. (i was too lazy to get behind my desk) once I used the cable supplied, which was slightly different, all was fine.

I found the Lacie D2’s to be a bit flaky…and I attribute a lot of it to the power supply and that ‘soft’ power switch (as opposed to a definite off and on switch). I’ve had two D2’s go bad because of the power…took the drives out and put them in different enclosures, not a problem. Luckily, those enclosures had compatable chipsets for the apps I was using (Oxford for Pro Tools).

I just don’t trust those enclosures anymore. I’ve had much better reeliability with drives/enclosures from OWC.
