I opened my Mac this morning and couldn’t get my FCP projects to open. I got a red alert that the disk repair couldn’t fix my Firewire (Lacie)drive but was giving me limited access to it. I can still open the drive and see and play the files, but FC will not reset is as my scratch drive. Is this fixable? What causes is in the first place? It never lost power. Can I copy the files to another drive and reconnect to FC? I am working on one project in particular that is almost finished so I don’t want it to crash now.

Rush to the nearest Apple or Mac Store and buy a copy of Disk Warrior. When you get back, follow the directions and it may save your drive. Every Mac owner and video editor should have DW anyway, it’s really an essential item.

However, most LaCie failures are caused by failure of the power supplies they ship with their units, not the hard drives inside, so you might be hosed.

Also, you might try connecting that Lacie to other Mac and have no problems at all,
happened to me recently, repair it there in Disc Utilities.
But do get a copy of Disc Warrior and buy a back up hard drive if you don’t already have it backed up.

I do have Disk Warrior. I opened it and it wanted to rebuild the disk. What does that do, exactly? I closed it out because I didn’t want it to erase or reformat it. I’ve backed up most of my media but not all of it yet. Funny thing, my projects still open from the damaged Lacie drive except for the one I really need to work on. It starts to open, I get the progress bar, and then the error message “This project is unreadable or may be too new for this version of Final Cut.” I got this message even when I moved the media to my other drive and changed the scratch disk to that drive.
So it seems like the project itself is corrupted.

Don’t sweat it, just run the damn thing Leonard.

For the record, I’ll warn you if you need to worry about something. Okay? Helping editors is kind of like going camping, where the objective is to leave the campsite in better shape than you found it.
