ive been closely monitoring the posts about the s2vr duo by caldigit.
i currently have 2x500gb lacie drives. i use mostly hdv, but i would like to start upconverting to dvcpro hd for editing. i dont use uncompressed hd right now…

so my plan A was caldigit’s 1.5gb s2vr duo with lacie’s 2tb back up. (same as mr walter)

    plan b is lacie 2.5gb biggest s25.

is the lacie s25 a reliable system? the advertisement on my left says at 187MB/s, it can do hd uncompressed? can the caldigit duo?

im thinking i could use my current 2x500gb drives for a raid 1 backup on the lacie system until i need more backup space.

    suggestions?

Let’s be fair here. The S2S is a FIVE drive unit…and the Duo is a TWO drive unit. The Duo can get 148MB/s empty, and 102 MB/s at 90% full (my numbers).

If you want to compare models, go with the CalDigit S2VR HD. That gets 230MB/s…dwarfing the 187MB/s that the S2S gets. And since Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 HD requires 180MB/s, you have more “wiggle room.” More of a ceiling, so that when the drive fills up, the performance doesn’t drop too much.

I would go with the S2VR Duo and the 2TB LaCie FW800 RAID for backup. The Duo is a smaller footprint than the S2S and the speeds are comparable. The S2S is a little faster because it is 5 drives, but not so much that it will make a huge difference in what you’re doing.

I would avoid the CalDigit S2VR HD (5 drive model) for the time being.

Good. The Duo is a great little unit.
