I just read Walter Biscardi’s review of the LaCie Biggest F800 and am interested in it for our DV based “B-Suite.” It currently has a chain of 4 or 5 external FW drives that is starting to get on my nerves.

I’d like to replace it with a a RAID system similar to what I have in our main suite (AJA IO w/ a HUGE SCSI raid) but since the B-Suite is only DV, I don’t want to spend the $$ for an expensive SCSI solution.

But here in lies my quandry. What raid settings (Raid 0, Raid 3, Raid 5???) do I use. I’d like the best combination of data protection and speed. Is there a comprehensive “Dummies Guide” to RAID configurations that I can read. I thought I undertood the differences, but a discussion with a friend left both of us questioning our understanding.

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Hello Steve,
I would recommend that you use the Biggest F800 in a RAID 5 configuration. That way your data is protected in the event of a drive failure.

Here is something you can read about RAID:

    Hope this helps.
