A friend recommended posting an inquiry to your forum to see you folks had any advice with a hard drive problem that I’m having. Only one month ago, I purchased an external 500 gb Big Disk Extreme from LaCie to store all of our digitized media for the film critic projects. After digitizing over 25 hours of footage into FCP 4, we ran into a problem with the drive. The computer that we were using to edit with wouldn’t recognize the drive on the system. And, it felt very hot to touch, and it smelled like something was burning. We ran Disk Warrior and an Apple disk utility program on it in order to try to retrieve the media.

But, neither program worked. Disk Warrior didn’t recognize the drive at all, and the Apple disk utility program recognized that the 500 drive was made of up of two drives, one of which was completely dead. After speaking extensively with LaCie, the chances of the hardware failing is one in a million. And yet, it appears to be what has happened. I also spoke to a company who said that they could retrieve the data for me for $2,500 to $4,500, which we can’t afford.

So, before I send the drive back to LaCie and lose all that media, I was wondering if you might have ideas about other methods for retrieving some of the information on the drive. Also, recommendations for
future back up ideas would be most appreciated.

    Thanks for your help!

Where are the source tapes? I wouldn’t pay a dime if I had the source tapes. The media might be lost on the drive, but you still have it on the source tapes…all you need to do is get the new drive and re-capture. I know it is time, but I wouldn’t trust media that had to be recovered. Might be corrupt or damaged in some way.

And LaCie should give you a new drive, if it is still under warranty.

I can’t help much, but I know from other postings here on the COW that the odds of a hardware failure with LaCie drives seem to be much, much higher than 1 in a million. I seem to recall that some folks with BDXs that couldn’t be recognized in OSX, went into OS9 and were able to see them. The burning smell and the Apple Disk Utility report seem to point to a total loss, but you might give it a try. Also do an archive search in this and other COW forums, because the “very reliable” LaCie drives come up a lot (for their “unreliability”).

One in a million is definitely a joke.

Unfortunately, for you the 500 GB model uses two hard drives together as one RAID. If it was only one drive then you could just pull the drive out and put it into another enclosure (a RAID is far more tricky).

If you have the tapes, I agree with Shane, redigitize. Get a replacement from LACIE and just do it. It is a lot easier than the alternative.

If you don’t have the original tapes or there is something you really need on the drive, get a replacement and open it up (this will void your warranty) and swap the drives from your old LACIE to the new one. If you keep LACIE on the phone long enough they might even coach you through it (they did it once for a friend of mine).

The reason I say this is because the logic card (for the RAID) fails a lot more than the drives do. My buddies LACIE has the bridge board go bad for example, the drives inside were fine.

By the way, opening the LACIEs up and changing the drive is not as hard as it sounds.

Those are your basic scenarios. Good luck.

    Hello Amy,
I am sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with one of our drive.

If you need any help you can email me directly at mgasquy@lacie.com. Our tech support will also plan to follow up with you at your convenience.

With about 2 millions drives shipped this year, you will hear more often about LaCie on the Cow and other forums where people post when they have a problem. That’s expected.

    Thanks.

Well, for the last two years we have had 4 Lacie 500GB.
All of them have gone back to Lacie within 12 months.

We had owned a bunch of the great older models, the blue and silver, and
never thought that we would have SO MUCH trouble with the new “Big Disks”.

Nevertheless, the Tech Staff at Lacie has been extremely helpful, besides one Tech
Support Ladie, “DELVA JOHNSON”, who told me over the phone that “I DID NOT KNOW
WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT”. I suppose after running a post-production boutique
for over 4 years, I should know when a drive goes bad. Anyway, “Delva” told me I
was stupid for thinking that a Lacie drive would go bad and hung up the phone.

Luckily, a Tech Support guy was really helpful, and he did order to get the drives over
to fix them up. We lost time recapturing hours of video, but that just comes with the trade.

I really hope the call and email I left to Mr. Paul Yamashita (the Tech Support Boss) went through
and that the unhelpful/unprofessional Delva Johnson got written up.

Hmmm, at the “1 in a million” rate, there should have been a total of, let’s see………2 failed drives in the past year. Just from this forum alone, I’d say the odds are closer to “getting a cold” rates than “getting struck by lightning” rates. 🙂

I’ve never had as many problems with other hard drives then the Lacie. I don’t know what HD they use in their cases. What ever it is IT SUCKS. Yeah Lacie will replace your hd not the material you lost. Do yourself a favor and toss your hard drive quick.

That’s funny because LaCie has been rock solid here for over a year. We run the Big Disk Extreme (500GB model) with everything from DV to 10bit uncompressed. The drive hops around from system to system as needed with no issues.

I’ve also recommended the unit to quite a few people and they all seem to like them as well.
