LaCie 4Big quadra – appropriate for video editing?
Hey Guys,
I was going off a friends setup when I bought the LaCie 4 big quadra. I opened the box today and it looks completely different than the one on my friends machine (he bought a 1 or 2 years ago). This one only has esata/firewire 800/400 and USB.
My friends had a card that came with the box and a proprietary connection that had a serial connection on one end and 2 connections on the other…(I’ve never seen that connection type before).
I was really expecting something different when I opened the box. I would guess my best option would be to install an esata card in my mac pro. But my question is – is that capable of running HD quality video…mostly using pro-res transcoded footage…occasionally xdcam and maybe sometimes uncompressed.
I’ve not used esata as an external connection before, so I’m a bit in the dark.

Uncompressed, no. To my knowledge no eSATA boxes can do uncompressed unless you have multiple eSATA connections on both the box itself and the card in the machine. This requires at least an SAS/SATA connection like our Maxx Digital Evo HD series of boxes.
Compressed HD you should have no problems with.

That eSATA connexion is 3Gbites.
My HDs with eSATA 1.5Gbits read/writes around 100MB/s. This one should be able to read/write at double speed.
I guess you will need to get the top speed a 3Gbits eSATA card.
That HD will have no problem to move few layers of Porress 1080.

Not sure Walter, with the 3Gbits connexion.
The 1.5 it can not. At least 10b Unc. I haven’t tried 8b Unc.

Just make sure I get an esata card for my mac pro that is 3Gbs? Any other special advice?

LaCie have now a 3Gbits eSATA card. 300US$.
You may find something cheaper.
