Activity Forums Adobe Premiere Pro L-Cuts?

  • Posted by Mark Hollis on August 20, 2009 at 1:51 pm

OK, I have been creating L-Cuts, a technique I like a lot for making programs nicer, with Premiere Pro 1.5 for a while.

My workflow is to unlink audio and video for the four tracks (assuming one stereo audio and one video) involved. I use the “Rolling Edit” (N) tool, drag audio or video, depending on what I am doing, then relink tracks for safety.

Is there a faster way to do this? Avids don’t prevent you from moving video or audio in an L-cut as long as you correctly select the channels you wish to effect.

What if there were no hypothetical questions?

You could do it several ways.
I think this way would be one of the quickest.

    1. Lock the video track the clip you want to L cut
    2. use N key to select rolling edit tool
    3. move the audio cuts to desired spot
    4. unlock the video track
    5. use V key to go back to Selection Tool (arrow)

Since I have never used 1.5, I will assume ALT+N does not perform a rolling edit on an individual track, as it does in CS3.

With the ripple edit tool selected Shift-Opt-click (Mac) enables you to individually choose multiple ripple trimmers.

    You can either

    1. Drag these ripple trimmers to your desired edit point.
    2. Press E (extend edit to make the edit)
    3. Press T (to go into trim mode) and then use J,K,L to dynamically trim.

Once you get used to it they’re actually more versatile than Avid’s trim tools. One thing I would suggest to Adobe though is for an asymmetrical trimming mode, which goes into trim mode with video and audio asymmetrically selected, that would save a lot of time.

    Cheers,
    James
