Kona2 Vs Kona LH
Posted by Juan Carlos aguirre on December 19, 2005 at 11:02 pmHi everyone…
I’m looking to upgrade my IO to HD, in past post I read that Kona card is a good affordable option, but if there any difference (in terms of video quiality) between Kona 2 and Kona LH. I’m still using analog SD in some cases.
Could I use PCI-Xpress on a dual G5 (not the new ones), or I need PCI.
Thanks
Jacalo

December 19, 2005 at 11:44 pmactually you can keep your IO, use it to upconvert that analog into the kona 2….or your could go LH/LHE and have no upconvert, 4:4:4 and 2 channels of audio (8 embedded). that is the big difference….both are great cards, but the upconvert on kona 2 is the killer feature
what camera will you be working with in the HD world? if it is SDI, then kona 2 is the no-brainer…since you keep all of the IO from your IO.

December 20, 2005 at 12:31 amI’m starting my post house, and most likely my clients give me the stock on digibeta, but they are start sending all kind of stuff, like HDV, DVCproHD and HDCam.
Also I just bought an HDV camera the HDR-FX1 to star playing with HD, so now I looking to the right HD Card.
So let see if I understand (sorry) the best for the Kona 2 is the upconvert that means I can upgrade SD to HD right.. and that’s something the Kona LH doesn

December 20, 2005 at 12:53 amKona LH also has analog video/audio inputs/outputs. Kona 2 has one analog video output and the rest of the inputs and outputs are digital. If you are working with HDV you will need to somehow convert analog to digital if you planning on mixing different forms of HD. For example, if you are going to have HDV and DVCPro HD in the same project, you are going to need a way to get the HDV into DVCPro HD with the right adapters. AJA makes great little converter boxes that will do just that, convert analog HD to HD/SDI to be used to digitize into the K2/FCP. If you think you are going to need the upconvert feature, I would suggest getting a K2 and use it with your io, and then you will also need a Analog Component HD to HDSDI converter and you will also need an audio analog to digital converter such as an MAudio flying cow. If you absolutely do not need the upconvert feature, than the Kona LH is the way to go for you as it has analog, digital, SD and HD. If there’s something you need to be upconverted, you can always send it out to be converted to the format of your choice.
Good luck in your decisions.

December 20, 2005 at 10:26 amjeremy is describing the HD10a converter–it takes the analog signal from your sony HDV so you can cross convert to uncompressed or dvcpro HD….the ADA-4 should be out soon or the cow works. hey, this is one of my exact setups!

December 20, 2005 at 10:59 amI have done captures from a FX1 using the Kona LH analog component inputs.
Very nice compared to HDV. Check out this thread….thread -

December 20, 2005 at 6:33 pmHi Will,
Were you ever able to add a comparison with DVCPro HD? Would be interesting to see.
Thanks!

December 20, 2005 at 8:23 pmCool,
I know what you mean, I can’t wait until next week. It will be cool to see what you come up with since it will be comparing apples to apples.
Thanks again,

December 20, 2005 at 8:35 pmI ordered a Macbeth chart. Maybe it will get here in time for the tests.
If not I’ll still make sure there is a good variety of subject matter.-will
