  • Kona2 and IO LA not getting along very well…

My system has both the Kona2 and the IO LA installed. Both have the newest drivers available installed on them. I also am running MacOS 10.4.5.

After installing the Kona2 1.2.1 version of the drivers, if I select the IO LA to capture any DV footage, I get an error message saying that it cannot find the AJA Kona device and asks to find it or continue. I click continue and capture as normal using the IO LA. When I’m done capturing, I then have to reselect the Kona2 in the Easy Setups so that I can hear audio. All the while, during the capture, I can see video thru my Kona2 but not audio. I have to use an analog audio board to monitor the audio, just as I do the Kona2 but using a different input.

All in all, the problem is that when I select the IO LA, FCP loses my Kona2 and I lose my audio UNTIL I finish capturing and reselect my Kona2. I have gone thru all of the steps to reinstall, I have repaired the permissions, I have trashed my preferences in FCP. I’ve done it all and the error still exists. It doesn’t keep me from working but it very very annoying.

    Are you using easy setups?

Rebooting the IoLA sometimes works for me. Quit FCP, pull the power on the IoLA, count to 10, power up the IoLA, then restart FCP. You also might want to check you have the latest firmware updates on your IoLA.

    You state –
if I select the IO LA to capture any DV footage

REPLY – now, I hope that I am misinterpreting what you are saying here, but you do say that when you select the IO LA to capture any DV footage – what is your DV VTR? Are you coming from the DV VTR into the LA via composite, component, S-Video – or are you going directly into the MAC via firewire from the DV VTR or camera? Becuase if you are (and I know that I am probably wrong about what you are doing) – then you are just asking for trouble because you will get conflicts between the AJA I/O LA and any DV Firewire VTR or camera (like a Sony DSR-30 DV VTR).

As you know, the drivers and installers for the I/O LA and the Kona 2 are totally seperate, and are selected independently in the Easy Setups menus.
Perhaps you should for now abandon FCP, and do all of your tests with the Kona Control Panel, and IO control panel, to make sure that all of your hardware is working.

I’m sorry… I didn’t clarify myself whenI was talking about capturing DV. We are using Sony’s HDV Z1 cameras for secondary camera work and sometimes main camera work. To digitize SD video, I have to use my IO LA using the component input via component out of the HDV deck. The down-conversion is in the deck. The video is as sharp as our XDCAM discs, so matching up is just a few click using the color corrector 3-way.

Oh yeah, my HDV firewire deck and the IO LA are connected to different firewire busses (one firewire card and one built-in the Mac).

Yes, I am aware of the Kona2 and the IO LA having independent drivers and software but according the AJA they should run together beautifully but not so on my part… The hardware checks out just fine on their own. the only problem I’m having is in FCP 5.0.4

Why don’t you monitor the audio & video output from the IoLA during capture ?

    Hi

I have a Kona LH and an IO La on my dual 2.7 g5 running fcp 5.0.4.

I can only work with one or the other at one time, if i try to capture on my

IO la and listen on my kona i get beach ball

    Sooooooo

I have both my devices set up through my audio mixer and when i capture into the LA, i am monitoring through the LA, THEN I switch over to the kona, since that feeds my main video monitor. Same goes with capturing via the kona ie i monnitor the kona when i capture through the kona

the only system i find that works is to check the preference for “use different setup for edit to tape” then use my kona for playback and my io for edit to tape

    hope this helps

    bee eph

ALSO i always get that “cant find kona” message. I just ignore it and keep going
