  • Kona video playback not working

Posted by Fergus Hammond on June 9, 2006 at 3:01 am

I’ve got an HD monitor connected to the component analog ports of a Kona LHe. However, when I attempt to use that as a vido playback option in FCP, I don’t get live video. Instead, when I stop the playback in FCP, the last frame is displayed as a still on the HD monitor. I’ve selected the “All Frames” option in FCP.

I’m using FCP 5.1 and the latest 2.0 Kona drivers.

Does anyone know what causes this problem?

    Thanks,
    FH

Oh, I forgot to mention that one thing that’s odd is that if drag the playhead through the sequence, the video playback works. It just won’t play if I’m playing in real-time (or using JKL either in real-time or another speed).

Try using an easy setup to match your sequence and playback settings.

Make sure your sequence is the same codec and Standard as your playback settings.

    Hi David,

Well, that made a lot of sense. It’s what I did with some 1080i HDV footage from a Sony camera and it worked perfectly. It’s also what the Kona manual suggested. But here’s the odd thing: I ended up fixing the problem by doing the *opposite* of what you recommended!

The footage is 29.97 fps DVCPRO HD 720p60 from the HVX200. I used the 720p30 easy setup and made sure the sequence used the same. I couldn’t find a playback option close to that, so I’d thought the 8 bit 720p60 would be the best (I was assuming the playback fps was referring to the compressor type, not the actual frame rate). That didn’t work and it’s only when I finally tried using the 720p59.94 8 bit playback choice did it start working. That doesn’t make much sense to me. Or is 29.97 more lated to 59.94 than 29.97 is to 60? I think I now realize that the playback naming must refer to the actual frame rate.

I’m new to this so I’m not surprised if you’re smacking your head and saying “well, obviously!”.

    Regards,
    Fergus

get out your calculator… divide 59.94 by 2…

720p60 is shorthand for the frame rate in the US ( it is 59.94) so that it matches the 29.97 TC for SD content.
