We are getting ready to make the move in our second edit room to work with grown up video. I’ve search the forums and around the web, but couldn’t find a definitive comparision between the Kona LS and the IO LA. What are the advantages of one over the other. Is the minimal hardware acceleration of the LS with dissolves and stuff make that much of a difference. We only have a DSR 40 and a PVW 2800. No sdi decks, but with the SDI in/outs on the LS we could hook the FCP system up to our avid SDI. Anything else I’m missing?

    Thanks,

    Rick

IF you are completely non technical, you will find the I/O LA to deal with. The LS gives you SDI I/O, but if you don’t care about this, and just have the DSR40 and the PVW2800, the I/O LA is a fantastic purchase for you. You are correct that you can send SDI to your AVID from the LS, but remember that older AVID’s DO NOT handle embedded audio, so you will have to send the SDI AND AES/EBU audio signal to your AVID.

Both are great products – the LA is just easier.

Portability is one of the IO LAs biggest selling points in my humble opinion. Not everyone needs that,
but if you have a PowerBook and an IO, you can hit the road (or the beach).
Getting past the FW latency thing is easier for some people than others. You don’t get latency with the LS, or any PCI card.

I don’t know where latency can be a problem for capture.
