June 5, 2010 at 3:40 amHi Jeremy,
I ordered these newsreels from NARA on mini-DV NTSC tapes. I know the footage was originally shot 24p at the time, but they’re playing back at 29.97 fps from my Sony M35U tape deck and being upscaled to 720p59.94
If understand correctly then. I should instead be using Compressor to upconvert and select reverse telecine to 24p in Compressor and I might see an even better upconvert as a result of doing reverse telecine and 24p?

June 5, 2010 at 5:48 amDoes it matter whether you select “pillar box” or “anamorphic” in the aspect ratio tab of the Aja Settings panel for up conversion? Since you can change the aspect ratio of your unconverted footage in the FCP settings tab to “33.33” to get the pillar box look if you selected “anamorphic” in the Aja settings panel…which is what I did.

June 5, 2010 at 1:21 pmYou should at least give it a try. Capture the footage as ProRes NTSC and use Compressor. See which one you like better. With a reverse telecine, you are restoring the footag to it’s original frame rate. By upconverting to 720p60 first, you are deinterlacing 2 pulldown frames, and then you have to then retune the 60p to 24p. You will me making up and losing frames in the process.
It’s up to you, but I encourage you to run some tests. If you want, upload 3 seconds of
original footage (NTSC) and I’d be glad to show you the difference.Jeremy

June 5, 2010 at 6:49 pmHi Jeremy,
Can you specify the exact procedure in Compressor?
OK I imported this time through Kona LHi as Pro Res NTSC 525i29.97
What Compressor setting do I select in the settings menu?
Pro res 422 for interlaced material?
Pro res 422 for interlaced material (high quality)?
Pro res 422 for progressive material?
Pro res 422 for progressive material (high quality)? In the inspector tab under Frame controls, what should my settings be?
Thanks very much in advance,
– Nick

June 5, 2010 at 9:38 pmHi Shane,
I just did thank you. I just realized that I have over 42 mini-DV tapes of WWII (24p) footage.
I up-converted a 12 second 480i29.97 test clip to 720p59.94 with my Kona Lhi card using Apple Pro Res 422. That produced a 220MB size file. But after reading your article, I was very pleased to discover that the upconverted clip is now only 70MB after I had Compressor convert it to DVCPRO HD 720p24.
Shouldn’t I then do this to all my WWII mini-DV tapes: run them all through Compressor to convert them from 720p59.94 to 720p24 since that would free up an enormous amount of space on my hard drives?

“Yes. But skip the capture to ProRes, and go directly to DVCPRO HD, then compressor to remove the frames. ProRes is adding compression that you don’t need to add.

June 5, 2010 at 10:56 pmThe problem is that I don’t have “DVCPRO HD” as an option in my Kona LHi up convert settings. In my Log and Capture Window I have dozens of Kona LHi “Apple Pro Res” settings to chose from but no “Kona LHi DVCPro HD” settings at all.
Is that because Kona LHi doesn’t offer DVCPRO HD options?

June 5, 2010 at 11:06 pmGood question. I’m not in front of my LHi machine now. You’ll have to wait until Monday for that answer.
