  • Kona LHe FCP timecode via HD/SDI

My company has a Cannon XHG1 camera that we do a lot of live recording with via the HD/SDI out of the camera directly into the Kona LHe card. The SOP has been to capture in FCP with the “Non Controllable Device” and “Capture Now.” As an editor, I am not happy with this because I have no time code! In AJA’s control panel I can see the timecode is coming in with the video and audio all in THE SAME HD/SDI, but I cannot figure out how to have FCP recognize and use that time code. What FCP settings do I need to be able to have time code along with the “Capture Now” method?

    Again, the stats are:
    – Cannon XHG1
    – HD/SDI contains video/audio/time code
    – Kona LHe
    – FCP 6.0.1
    – 1080i 29.97

The question: How can I make FCP see and record the time code being delivered with the HD/SDI video and audio?

    Thanks!

As far as I know, it can’t. Not via HD SDI. You need a camera with a separate TIMECODE OUT BNC connection…but then you need the AJA I/O HD in order to see that. One of the BIG breakthroughs with the I/O HD was the ability to capture camera time code, so that the footage you captured on the fly matches that on the tape.

That Canon doesn’t have a separate timecode out connection…and as I said, I don’t think the Kona cards read time code on the HD SDI connection.

Shane, thanks so much for your prompt post!

Our Cannon XHG1 actually does have the timecode BNC out (HD/SDI, Gen Lock, and Timecode BNCs) and with our Kona LHe card I can actually SEE the real time timecode via the HD/SDI, but only in the AJA Control Panel window. We do know that the I/O HD can capture timecode, and that may need to be a final solution, but since I can see the TC in the AJA window I’m in denial that there isn’t SOME WAY for FCP to see and use it as well.

I’m trying to determine if there are any device control presets I could download and install or any workflows that could use the technology I already have. I don’t control the purse strings so I have to make sure we’ve exhausted every option before I make a pitch for the I/O HD!

It isn’t your Kona cards fault, for whatever reason FCP won’t read SDI embedded timecode, it needs to be in the rs422 stream which your camera doesn’t have.

Perhaps this box will help. https://www.adrielec.com/box20lit.htm

You can use AJA’s (free) VTR Xchange to capture with RP-188 TC over SDI. From the manual:

The default state for the VTR Xchange preferences sets the Preferred clip
timecode source to Deck. The other option of RP-188 allows users to write
embedded timecode information from an HD-SDI output if present. Scenarios
where the use of the RP-188 choice would be appropriate would be for
obtaining timecode from a device that cannot be controlled such as an HD
    camera, HSDL enabled telecine, etc.

If you haven’t done so already, just go to the support area at aja.com & download it.

    thanks arnie,

could not have said it better,

the issue is FCP’s ability to read embedded TC over HDSDI, VTRX will and does see TC over HDSDI whether is a Kona Card or IoHD.

It allows you to record and playout video without the overhead of all of the FCS suite.
