Kona LHe and Dualcore 2Ghz PowerPC G5
Posted by Christopher Tay on May 8, 2007 at 10:58 amHi,
Anyone out there running Kona LHe with a dualcore 2Ghz PowerPC G5 (not Mac Pro) ?
I’ve had no luck with two of them and both showed the same symptom where if I switch between SD and HD, ie. from 625i to 1080i25 and then back to 625i, it will lock up the system.
I’ve tried different PCIe slot, fresh OSX, Kona 3.3, 3.4 driver and even a Kona 3 and all exhibited the same problem.
I’ve checked with AJA and was told this model is supported.
Any idea ?

The LHe does NOT work on the older machines. You need the LH.
We have a Kona 2 still running perfectly in our G5 Dual 2.0.

It is a Dual Core, so it does have PCIe slots in it, not PCI-X.
I’d suggest zapping the PRAM, resetting NVRAM, reset PMU, and trash preferences in that order.

Only the G5 Quad 2.5 has the PCIe slots. We have one of these machines in our shop. All other G5’s have PCI-X slots.
Chrispy is describing the G5 Dual 2.0, which we also have one here in the shop, that’s a PCI-X machine.

May 8, 2007 at 2:13 pmHi Wally,
This is the late 2005 PowerMac G5 series and they all have PCI-Express slots. There’s a single dualcore 2.0Ghz, single dualcore 2.3Ghz and dual dualcore 2.5Ghz model. There are 2 x 4 lanes and 1 x 8 lane PCI-Express slots which are all ok for the Kona LHe card.

May 9, 2007 at 9:35 amyeah,
we have one dualcore 2,3 Ghz running with the Kona LHe.
Works like a charm though.
Do as chrispy suggested & install and run FCP once before you install the kona drivers. -

Well that’s crazy. Last I heard 2.5 were the only Quad G5 machines. Is the 2.0 any good?

May 9, 2007 at 2:21 pmHi Wally,
The 2.5 is indeed a Quad machine (dual dualcore). The 2.0 and 2.3 are single dualcore machine and they work fine if you don’t need a powerful machine. It’s just that one two different 2.0 G5, I keep having problem with the G5 locking up when I switch the LHe from SD to HD and then back to SD.
