[Paul] “What about monitoring? Can you monitor both SD / HD signals easily? What about HD Component, instead of HD-SDI?

I forgot to answer this. Yes and in spades. There’s SD SDI, HD SDI, Component (HD & SD), S-Video (SD), Composite(SD) and HDMI (HD/SD). All of those you can monitor with and capture with.

One thing to be aware of is that Color does not currently support Firewire devices. That includes V3HD, Io and IoHD.

Color does work with the Io HD. It’s support is limited to SD at the moment, but it does work.

It sounds like you may not have looked at the brochure yet. It’s here:
    https://www.aja.com/html/products_Io.html

there is a good shot of the back of it so you can easily see all the connections. SD / HD SDI, SD / HD Component, S-Video, Composite, HDMI, pretty much anything you can throw at it, you can monitor.

    I have been lucky

Aja allowed me early access to the IoHD and as my article ( Bob, jeremy and soon walter) will attest that the damn thing just works.
Currently the big questions for most users revolve around using HDV as source material, and since most of us do not work with HDV that much, many of those questions are yet to be fully tested or answered.

If you are, or are planning on sticking to a 10bit ProRes workflow, or you capture in DVCPROHD this device pretty much covers all the bases even from a laptop.

Remember that to use the IoHD, you cannot use FW drives on the same buss, you will need to add one. I have been using a G Sata with my unit (I have a sonnet sata card to connect to) without any issues at all.

actually the IoHD does output an SD only signal from Color.

this is because Color is set to deliver 1/2 size frames on playback with prores content.
not good for true monitoring but still useable for a quick look.

Thanks, all! Certainly looks like it’ll do the job without becoming a potential major hassle.

Last question: Will it downconvert an HD to an SD signal for monitoring on the fly if I don’t have a proper HD monitor? Or is that more an FCP function?

    Cheers,

Live realtime downconvert is a function of All of the Aja HD products.

On the IoHD – the Composite and Y/C ports are continuously active regardless of whether the video is HD or SD

I think that part of creative cow is down right now, unfortunately. If you notice at the very top of the screen there is some red writing on the wall.
