Kona Hardware down conversion from HDV
Hi all, I’ve got a project originated HDV 1080i PAL, captured native, which needs to be layed off onto digibeta for grading and subsequent SD tx.
In my only other experience of an HD project so far we graded on a Baselight 10bit uncompressed HD, then mastered to HDCAM SR, and used that deck to do the downconversion onto digibeta.
This project doesn’t have the budget for that!
So my question is does a hardware downconverter such as Kona 3 cut the mustard? Are you better doing it in software at best quality and rendering overnight? Or do you get what you pay for and I have to hire a Snell & Wilcox downconverter? All these inexpensive cards seem to promise the earth in terms of cross/down conversion, but I’d like to know from those who use them for real.Many thanks in advance.

yes, it “cuts the mustard”, and is used by major houses everywhere, for exactly this application. Your downconversion to your Digi Beta (SD-SDI) will look fantastic.
