Kona DownConvert Issue
Posted by Andrew Saliga on February 19, 2010 at 10:39 pmIn a pinch and searching.
Can a Kona 3 downconvert ProRes422HQ 1920x1080p 23.98 to SD? Having issues.

February 20, 2010 at 12:05 amyes but very few things that are SD can handle true 23.98 so you normally go to 525 @ 29.97 with a pull down added.

February 20, 2010 at 12:17 amSorry, was in rush mode. For some reason the ad agency told all local stations that the spots were ready before they were even approved.
Is there a specific pulldown I should select? 3:2:3:2?

February 20, 2010 at 12:20 amI have the Kona set to 2:3:23 I see. Is there something I’m missing? I have siganl from Kona to deck to monitor, but I can’t seem to get it right to run FCP through. (test signals from Kona control panel work)
Edit was shot film, was transferred to ProRes422HQ at 1920×1080, progressive and 23.98. Running it out to Beta.

February 20, 2010 at 2:03 amYou have to put your easy setup in to 1080 psf 23.98, then use the secondary output on the control panel for your output device. For instance, if you are using SDI2 that is going to your Sd deck, then right click on the SDI2 triangle in the control panel and change it to ‘secondary’ then right click again and choose 525i.

February 20, 2010 at 2:34 pmgo to Audio/Video settings, playback, and select something that is a 29.97 output, not 23.98 (there is no 23.98 standard def downconvert). Then once you are at 1080i/29.97 playback output in your Audio/Video settings in FCP, THEN the control panel FORMAT tab can be set on secondary to 525, and it will downconvert to a true standard def VTR format.

February 22, 2010 at 5:19 pmThanks guys.
I wasn’t able to get it to work when I needed it the most, but today when I casually try your suggested setup I have no problems. Curse of the output day I guess.
So to recap, footage was shot on film, transferred to ProRes422 HQ 1920x1080p at 23.98fps. FCP sequences were set to be the same as this source. I set my easy setup to 1080psf23.98 ProRes HQ. Adjusted my deck control to a 29.97 deck since I was running to Beta, and me secondary output in the Kona Control Panel was set to 525i29.97.
Also Bob, you’d proud to know that we bought the AJA black burst generator you preach about. 🙂
