Need some quick help. i have a kona LH. doind an fcp project. majority of the media is dvcpro hd. i already captured all of it, my project is set up for dvcpro hd. i have a couple source tapes that are digital beta anamophic. i made all the right connections to the deck, but i’m having problems getting fcp to take control and capture it. what is the right combo for deck control and capture format. this is my first time doing this. i’m usually on an avid, client requested fcp. your help is appreciated. thanks.

Use Easy setup for the same DVCPro HD settings as you’re using all along, but make sure they’re a Kona DVCPro HD setting so you’ll capture through the Kona board.

Now go into Audio / Video Settings and change Device Control to something like Sony VTR A so you can control the DigiBeta.

In the Kona Control Panel make sure you select the correct input that the DigiBeta is connected to. You should see it switch to “Up convert” since your Easy Setup is HD. If not, you’ll need to manually reset this.

That should do it, you should be good to capture and upconvert on the way in.

The Kona Lh will not upconvert.

You will need to capture the clips as Sd anamorphic and then upconvert in compressor using an advanced format conversion.

    or

Send the tapes out to a dub facility to have them all upconverted to DVCPRO HD with a Terranex.

Whoops, missed that part about the LH. Yep, no upconvert in LH.

For upconverting, you can actually do it right in FCP. It does a very clean job of scaling up SD to HD.

what’s the process to upconvert. just export the SD capture with dvcpro hd settings?

You can put the SD media in an Hd timeline, scale up and render, or for superior results, you can export your whole timeline, bring it in to compressor and use the advanced format conversion to the format/frame rate of your choice. If you turn on all the ‘best’ settings in the encode tab, you will get nice results. This process does take a long time, so be prepared to wait.
