  • Kona as a replacement for Cinewave -Questions

I have been happy with my Cinewave but it is time to move on. I need analog component in and out, composite in and out, SDi in and out, HD- SDI in and out.. S-video would also be nice. Is there a Kona card that can do this or am I into a lot of converters? I still use my Sony 1800and occaisionally 3/4″ archive tapes and even some vhs from time to time. Then I ‘ll have a commercial shot on Varicam or Cine Alta. I need to be able to deal with them all.

    Thanks,

    Michael

I ran the CineWave for three years and what you want is the combination of a Kona card and the Io LA. We have two Kona 2 systems and one Kona 3 system along with an Io LA.

The LA gives you full analog input / output including S-Video. The Konas give you full SD and HD SDI along with Component output.

Which Kona you require depends on your machine and your editing requirements. The LH and Kona 2 are for PCI-X machines. LHe and Kona 3 for PCIe machines.

LH / LHe give you Analog Inputs along with HD to SD down-convert only.

Kona 2 gives you digial inputs only along with Component HD / SD output. You also get SD to HD Up-convert and HD to SD Downconvert.

Kona 3 gives you everything as the Kona 2 with the addition of HD Cross Convert. 720 to 1080 or 1080 to 720.

Kona is the best choice to move from a CineWave workflow as it even contains a control panel somewhat similar to the CineWave panel.

    Hey Walter,

With a Kona 2 and an IO LA, would you be able to capture HD-SDI video only from the Kona 2 and the audio analog from the IO LA; from the same HD deck simultaneously? The reason I ask is, the HDCAMs we shoot with have an “emphasis” noise reduction feature, that basically boosts the treble on the camera, then the deck de-empasizes on the way out by the same amount (analog outputs). With embeded audio or AES/EBU, the de-emphasis does not happen, so you get treble/hissy audio, unless you use the analog outputs of the deck. I was able to accomplish this easily with the Cinewave system.

I have turned this feature off on our camera, but older footeage or footage shot by our other division may still have “emphasis” on it.

You might want to look at the BlackMagic Design Multi-Bridge. Unlike the Kona 3 it can handle both analog component and digital — both SD-SDI and HD-SDI. While it down-converts HD to SD on the fly it does not have the Kona 3’s ability to up-convert SD to HD and cross convert 1080 to 720 on the fly. But if you don’t need those features it might be your answer.
