  • Kona 3G SDI Capture using Quadro 4000: distorted/no preview in Log and Capture Window

Posted by Dave Evans on April 21, 2011 at 4:00 pm

    Hi all,

I’m having some issues with the log and capture window in FCP, whereby when attempting to capture via SDI in a Kona 3G card, the log and capture window either doesn’t preview at all or shows a distorted video signal.

Oddly, if you tap the CAPS key it will show you one frame from the camera but then just freeze on that image. If you use an SDI monitor hooked up to the Kona card the preview has no issues at all.

Despite the above issues, it is still possible to capture the footage but the Mac is intended for use without an SDI monitor so the workaround I came across isn’t an option.

In addition, the Mac is currently set up with a Quadro 4000, if I revert back to the original 5770 then the issue goes away. Unfortunately this isn’t a viable solution either as the Mac needs to have the Quadro card in for use with CS5 etc… (which incidentally captures without any preview issues at all in Premiere!)

Specs for the system are below, if there is anything I have missed please let me know and I will get back to you as soon as I can:

    Mac Pro:

    2.4GHz 8 Core
    6GB 1066MHz DDR3
NVidia Quadro 4000 Graphics Card (2GB) in Slot 1
AJA Kona 3G Card in Slot 2

    Software:

    OSX 10.6.7 – have also tried 10.6.4, 10.6.5, 10.6.6
    AJA Driver version 9.0 – Have also tried 8.1, 8.1.1 and 8.1.2
Quadro Driver 256.01.00f03v7 – I believe I tried a previous incarnation of this labelled 256.01.00f03.
CUDA Driver 3.2 (Tried with and without this installed)
    FCP 7.0.3
Premiere CS5 (Unsure of specific version, I believe 5.0.2.

Capture formats attempted in FCP: (All set using the easy setups but also tried as many combinations of the settings in the L&C window on the off chance it would help)

    1080i50
    1080p25
    720p50

These were all captured directly via the SDI cables supplied with the Kona card, to eliminate this I’ve also tried every cable on the loom as well as another known working set of SDI cables.

Apologies for the amount of information I’ve just thrown at everyone here, any light/help you can put my way will be greatly appreciated. I’ve found someone else on the LAFCPUG forums who has the issue but as of yet they’ve had no reply either:

FCP recommended hardware is ATI not the NVIDIA. In the same way you can argue that FCP should work with the Quadro, then you can also argue that CS5 should work perfectly with the ATI. If you chose to run both FCP and CS5 on the same computer, you will have to chose which softwares functionality is to be compromised.

Cheers for the response Michael, I’m pretty certain *though to be confirmed* that the same setup with say a Quadro FX4800 would work fine, I absolutely need to run more tests and confirm what will or won’t work here so I can see for definite.

I’m really interested to see if there is anyone that has this working, albeit by fluke or if there are people out there with any NVidia cards working in this kind of situation. Recommended doesn’t necessarily mean not supported, though there is only so much testing I can do so it would be great to get some setup based feedback.

As an additional note for anyone that is interested I’ve checked the FX4800 today in the same machine I’ve been testing with no change to the software or drivers (as both cards use the same one) and it works fine with no problems or distortion.

    Hey guys,

So we’re having the same problem.

I called AJA support and spoke to Keith. After sending him screen shots of my Log and Capture window, he thinks it’s a problem with the Quadro 4000 (I think so a well, we have a computer with the same setup, but a FX4800 instead and it works fine). I’m waiting for a response from Autodesk to find out if the newest Kona 3G driver is compatible with smoke.

So then I called PNY and spoke to John. I told him about the problem, which he took to his engineer who said he didn’t think updating the Kona, the Mac OS, or switching which slots the cards were in would solve the problem, that we would probably need to wait for the next driver update for the 4000 to resolve the problem.

If anyone here’s anything else or solves this problem, let us know.

    Thanks,

Mac Pro with 2x 2.63 GHz 6-core Intel Xeon
    32GB RAM
    FCP Version: 7.0.3
    OS Version: 10.6.6
Capture Card: Kona 3G (Driver version 8.1.1)
GFX Card: Nvidia Quardo 4000 (Driver Version Retail_256.01.00f03v7)

Yeah it definitely will be an issue on the hardware level, I’ve had a system set up and literally just changed the Quadro 4000 out for the FX4800 with no changes to the drivers or anything and the FX works without any problems at all.

I’m expecting “resources allocated” in 2-4 weeks. Here’s hoping it’ll yield some results.

Hey all, It’s been tested and verified that its an Apple OS bug and has been seen working with the next update. I assume 10.6.8 though didn’t get clarification.

Also have no idea how long it will be before this is released.

    Cheers,
