I am trying to install the above however aja tells me that the Kona 3 is having issues in slots 3 and 4 and that they highly recommend slot 2 with the newer dual quad macs. My problem is that I bought ciprico’s new new 5116 raid array which needs 8 lanes to run at spec. That would also be slot 2. Has anyone out there played with this configuration? Any recommendations? I spent the extra money on storage throughput and would hate to throw the performance out of the window.

    Thanks!

I checked on all our systems and they have the Konas in slot 2.
    I hope you find a solution 🙁 !

Thanks Stuart. I am setting it up with Kona in slot 2 and ciprico in slot 3. Kevin Bare has been very helpful at Ciprico. He had me adjust a dip switch in the ciprico for use in a 4 lane. He tells me there should not be a loss of performance.

let me assure you that the Kona 3 works wonderfully in Slot 3, and your storage card in slot 4. If AJA says “you must use slot 2 or it won’t work” – then AJA is WRONG. I don’t believe that they said this.

Just make sure that everything is in at least a x4 slot. All x8 storage devices are MORE than fast enough for uncompressed HD in a x4 slot. NO MATTER what the storage manufacturer says.

    Thanks Bob! Much appreciated.

The guy I spoke with at aja said that they were having problems with the newest iteration of the mac dual quads. He said something about the 4 lane slots are clocking slower than a typical 4 lane but that a fix was being worked on.

After much back and forth with AJA support,
they now say that slot 3 is fine with the Kona 3
    and Mac Pro early 2008.
Just as Mr Zelin has said.

My adds to Bob Zelin message.
We used MacPro 2007 with AJA Kona 3 in slot 3 and Apple 4GB 4Channel or ATTO FC-44ES (less stable) in slot 4. Both lines in x4 mode. We got about 570MB/s Write and 620MB/s Read. Up to 2K playback on Kona3.
Now we migrated to last MacPro 3.2 and I put Kona 3 to clot 3 (x4) and ATTO FC-44ES in slot 2 (x16). We got about 810MB/s Write and 710MB/s Read! Kona 3 work fine up to 1080p 25 RGB Dual Link (2K not tested yet). All things is stable and looks fine. Will continue testing for now.

    best regards
