Kona 3 experts needed!

It’s Saturday, and I am not in front of a Kona 3 system.

1 Installed lg blu-ray burner

REPLY – the MAC Pro has a parallel ATA port for the CD busses. The only way you are getting a SATA Blu Ray burner to work in a MAC Pro is with a serial to parallel ATA adaptor (like from Addonics). Is this what you are doing ?

1 The sony optiarc dvd burner started seeing all discs as blank and will not burn

REPLY – do you mean your native CD burner is no longer working ? Pull out the LG (disconnect the cables from behind the unit), and see if the Sony starts to work.

2 final cut developed a sound like an old lp record was playing but only out of one channel sdi or analog out using a sd timeline

REPLY – you say later in this post that you UNINSTALLED the Kona3 drivers. Without drivers, nothing is going to work. Reinstall the Kona 3 drivers. DISCONNECT your Horita box for now, and put the AJA Kona 3 Control PAnel into INT REF (in the control tab). If you don’t terminate the Kona 3 reference in while using a Horita BSG-50, you will have all sorts of issues.

3 Toast seemed to lock up if I had final cut open to which I could not force quit and had to hard cut the computer which made the sound of a needle being dragged across an lp record.

REPLY – while listening to the Kona 3 output, or the MAC Audio output ? Disconnect your Horita. REload your Kona 3 drivers.

5 Tried to launch compressor to which it said my graphics card did not support quartz extreme (had been working fine, I think this was after a pram reset)

REPLY – this is a setting in the AJA Control Panel, in the control tab (I think) – this is why it is saying your card (an NVidia 8800, no doubt) that Quartz Extreme is not supported. change this setting in the contorl panel (I forgot the exact name) and this issue will go away.

I still hear the crackle when I hit the spacebar when playing video to pause but I think –

REPLY – disconnect the Horita, switch to internal reference in the AJA Control Panel.

I am using ref in video but have an older horita.
REPLY – well, stop using this. Disconnect this until your problems are gone.

I have read on posts rolling back firmware helps some problems.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

1a Per a recommendation on the blu-ray, I plugged into the sata port under the fan directly into the lg. I have had some success and some extreme lock-ups.
1b Tried disconnecting the lg but the sony still did not work
2 Sorry, I did re-install the kona drivers. Not sure if it matters but using the horita csg-50 rather than bsg-50 but it was terminated. I have switched to freerun in the control panel.
3 It was while listening throught the kona3 output. I tried the computer output and the sound was clean.
5 Compressor has been working again even prior to this post but I cant seem to find anything in aja control panel under any tab about quartz extreme. I know you said it may be another name.

As I mentioned, I believe for whatever reason, when I uninstalled Toast the problem in playback may have stopped but I really want to use toast. I am also curious about what your response will be about the blu-ray burner. Thanks again for your help.

Why? the Kona 3 does not interface with the software and hardware that you have added is not currently certified on the OS and it broke your computer.
The Kona 3 does not feed or does it capture from your internal BR device, and something you added to the mix broke the delicate balance.

As Gary notes, those are not supported on the Mac. I purchased a BluRay burner from FastMac about 18 months ago, it’s been working great in a Mac Pro from day one, no additional drivers needed.

All our systems have Kona 3’s. I would suggest you started with a Mac supported BluRay burner and report back after it’s installed.

I appreciate everyone’s support. I suppose that’s the reason apple
hasn’t signed off on it despite others saying it works. I know it works, I just burned a dvd in dvd studio pro. But I believe you are correct in “the delicate balance has been upset” Just in the case this comes up somewhere down the road, here is how system profiler sees it:

Ok, but in your last post you clearly stated that when TOAST was the issue, since when you uninstalled it the audio issue went away. This is that delicate balance I was referring to, as it is more often than not that the addition of 3rd party software is what causes the issue, since the hardware cannot run with out the addition of those software parts and from your own test – the software was the root of your problem.

you just burned a blu ray disk with DVD Studio Pro. You should be hired as a consultant
by Apple, as you have just done a miracle.

This matches the editorials in numerous magazines that ask people to look at HD monitors, and most cant tell if they are looking at HD or SD. Or the countless people at home that buy a HD monitor, but dont’ have an HD cable box, and look at normal SD television signals, but see the big 50″ TV monitor, and say “wow, that HD stuff is great”.

Sorry, you did not burn a blu ray disk using DVD Studio Pro.

Your Kona 3 could be completely dead – the Kona 3 has nothing to do with burning disks of any kind, and has nothing to do with Roxio Toast (or DVD Studio Pro). Your Horita CSG-50 will only function when your AJA control panel is in REF IN, and not Free Run.

Sorry, I think you mis-read. I didn’t say I burned a blu-ray with dvd studio pro. I stated that “I just burned a dvd in dvd studio pro.”
Just to let you guys know that the macpro did interact with the lg drive.

I contacted lg directly twice and one said it will work on a macpro with toast and the other didn’t recommend it.

I’m pulling the drive. Thanks for everyone’s input

we’ve got an LG in an external sata enclosure and it works fine with a caldigit sata pcie sata card. now if we could just find a bluray player that can playback bdr disks!

I’ve been doing this with a Sony BDP-301 for over a year. Also plays back the BD-RE disc I make for testing.
