Kona 2 with PVM-14L5/1
Posted by Bill Marcellus on June 29, 2006 at 1:13 pmWill the Sony PVM-14L5/1 display HD material properly utilizing the component outputs from the Kona2/KBox? In other words, can we use this setup to monitor HD material without the SDI card option on the PVM?
Thanks for any help.

June 29, 2006 at 2:08 pmDitto to Jeremy. HD-SDI board is a waste of money. We have the 14″ and 20″ models here both running via Component.

July 3, 2006 at 9:21 pmNow this is VERY interesting. So, one could save $1200 by going with the PVM monitor and this breakout box, rather than the HD-SDI card? I have a Kona3 and would like to get the PVM monitor. Would the K3 Breakout Box do the same as the K2? Does it do this via the Genlock Control (BNC Composite Vodeo)?

Yes, they’re basically the same. No, you don’t use composite video. You use the Component feed to the PVM.

July 20, 2006 at 7:52 pmdoesn’t running it analog component defeat the purpose of having dual link HD-SDI capabilities? won’t the signal to the monitor look way better if you go SDI over analog component?
thanks-

July 20, 2006 at 8:19 pmDual link is for a highly specialized form of HD. For the most part, I would venture to say that most people in this forum do not need or use Dual Link capabilities. I have used a PVM14L5/1 with the HDSDI card installed and there is virtually no difference in quality between using the HDSDI and the analog component. It is an HD signal none the less, even though it’s analog. If there is a difference in quality, it is not worth the cost of the HDSDI card. It is only worth it if you absolutely need HD SDI connectivity, and even then it’s kind of pointless as there’s cheaper ways to do it without sacrificing quality.
Save your money for faster storage.

Nope, looks identical to me. I have both to my 20″ monitor and can’t tell the difference. SDI is a waste of money on these monitors in my opinion.

July 21, 2006 at 3:21 pmok- that’s helpful- but the question then is- what’s the advantage of having the kona card to begin with if you’re not using the HD-SDI? is there a cheaper way to get component HD video out of the Mac to a monitor than a capture card and breakout box? i’ll be capturing all my footage via a firewire camera/deck and i just need a way to monitor my edit on an HD CRT.
Also, any thoughts on the Kona LH vs the Blackmagic Decklink HD cards for the mac? Does Blackmagic even offer a breakout option to get analog component HD video from that card?
thanks for any insights…
