    Hi,

I’m setting up a new edit suite and trying to decide between a kona2 + io la or a kona LH. Right now my immediate need is analog SD capture, with the potential for an ocassional SDI output to digibeta, but I would like to invest in some HD gear so I can start getting familiar with the workflow before I go looking for jobs doing it.

The LH seems almost perfect, I definitely don’t need dual link, and I don’t think I’d need to upconvert from sd to hd anytime soon. My question though is does the kona 2 also upconvert between HD formats? For instance, could you cut a project in dvcproHD 720p and then rent an HDCAM deck and output to 1080i with the kona upconverting on the fly, not having to render to uncompressed 1080i first? THAT would be mighty useful as I wouldn’t have to invest a fortune in a drive array just yet, but still be able to deliver an HD broadcast master if needed. It might make it worth it to go for the kona 2 if thats the case.

And for that matter, will the LH do this same trick?

thanks for any advice you can give.

Kona2 at the moment does not cross convert from 720p to 1080i and is apparently a hotly requested feature. Hopefully AJA engineering can look into this and best if it can be done on the Kona2 hardware.

Thats too bad. I guess you could re-render in FCP or AE to 1080i dvcproHD and still avoid the need for a fast array, but I imagine you’d take a hit on the quality by scaling up into a compressed format instead of uncompressed.

Is this the sort of thing AJA could update with software, or it would have to be a new model of the card? If software, any guess as to if it would be something they’d do for the LH as well as the Kona 2? I don’t know if this falls in the realm of “upconverting” and thus their differentiation between the cards, or if its considered “cross converting” and thus fair game for both their HD cards.

    thanks for the info.

All you need is the Panasonic 1200A deck. It does the 720p – 1080i cross-convert very very well. simply cut in 720p in your timeline, master to the 1200A, edit to the HDCAM.

Or go through a Terranex and convert that way. At first I was a believer that you MUST go through the Terranex, but after seeing a 1200A cross-convert vs. a Terranex cross-convert, they’re actually very close.
