kodak playtouch preview video choppy
Posted by Matt Klein on May 31, 2011 at 1:39 pmI have a Kodak playtouch video camera am having trouble editing the video in Sony Vegas Platinum 9. The audio plays fine, but the video preview is choppy.
I’ve tried increasing the amount of memory dedicated to Vegas and other such fixes, but it is still choppy. This same footage previews perfectly in Windows Movie Maker.
Thanks for your help.

What resolution and frame rate did you record the video at? Did you set you project up to be the same? Improperly matched project settings are the #1 cause for choppy playback.
If that doesn’t help, it may be that your old Movie Studio 9 software can’t handle the formats of these newer cameras. I would download the trial of Movie Studio 10 and see if it plays smoother. If it does, upgrading your software is one possible solution.
You didn’t say how powerful your computer is but if you want to edit these HD files, you really should have a powerful Quad Core. Unfortunately, the Kodak web site only lists the video format as “MPEG-4” which means it could be just about anything and there is no guarantee that any software can edit it smoothly.

I was discounting the computer as the problem, because I can edit the same footage fine in Windows Movie Maker without any problem. But the computer isn’t great. Dual Core, 2GB RAM.
In project properties I used the Match Media Settings function to set the project settings.
I did download Vegas 10, and it ran much smoother there.
Probably the solution is to get a better computer or shoot in a lower resolution. I think my students were all shooting in 1080p. Oops. 🙂

Well… think about it. You bought a new camera and you’re using software to edit it that came out 3 years ago in 2009. There is no way that Movie Studio 9 can be optimized for a format 3 years in the future. A software upgrade may be your cheapest option.

Yea, I wouldn’t try and edit anything more that 720-30p with a dual core.

June 1, 2011 at 9:18 amIt totally makes sense. I just tried the 1080p video on a Quad Core and it’s a lot smoother, but a still little laggy with Vegas 9. With the Vegas 10 trial, it works perfectly.
Thanks for your help!
