I expect the answer to my question is simple, but I can’t seem to find it anywhere.

I love using knockout groups to create text frames with see through text (see image). When applying an effect to the group however, it only apples to the frame, and not the inside of the text.

Is there a way to retain editable text, but apply an effect to the entire knockout group (including the inside of the text)? I know I could just outline the text and use pathfinder to create create one shape with the text cut out, but then I’m not able to change the text anymore.

    Not directly.

You would have to create the dropshadow manually as a duplicate of the knockout group behind the current group, fill with black and blur it, offset to taste and set blending to multiply.

You’d have to edit the text in two places, but it would be editable.
