Ki Pro Quad ProRes support
Posted by Lee Hunt on January 28, 2014 at 9:07 amHi,
We’re trying to encode 4k material using ffmpeg and ffmbc so that we can use our AJA Ki Pro Quad to playback the material. For some reason the Ki Pro Quad fails to play back the encoded video ? Video generated from FCP works fine, anyone else tried this ?
Thanks
Lee

January 28, 2014 at 11:31 pmFFMPEG is not an authorized implementation of Apple ProRes. Only Apple ProRes authorized products should be used to create ProRes file for playback on Ki Pro Quad. You may find a list of Apple ProRes authorized products here:
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT5959If you have additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact AJA Technical Support via phone or email, Monday through Friday between 9am and 5pm PST.

January 29, 2014 at 3:26 pmThanks, I had hoped it would work, hence the question. Is a shame its limited to Apple authorised encoded files, as it restricts the product to Mac only workflow, and restricts your target market.

February 5, 2014 at 10:35 amWe’ve now purchased a new Apple Mac to encode ProRes files, we’re using Apple Compressor 4. These files are still not playable on the AJA Ki Pro Quad !!

Kipro files have a specific encode needs did you follow it?
The main issue is the audio not being encoded at 48k 24bit as mono tracks.
most encoders default to 16bit audio with stereo tracksgary adcock

February 5, 2014 at 5:06 pmIf clips created externally are not seen by the Ki Pro Quad they likely don’t meet some requirement for appropriate encoding.
Page 81 of the Ki Pro Quad manual describes appropriately encoded clips.
Appropriately encoded clips must have the following properties:
• A supported codec: Apple ProRes 444, Apple ProRes 422 (Proxy), Apple ProRes 422 (LT), Apple ProRes 422, Apple ProRes 422 (HQ).
• A supported frame size: 4096×2160 (4K), 3840×2160 (Quad HD), 2048×1080 (2K), 1920×1080 (HD) or 1280×720 (HD).
• A supported frame rate: 23.98, 24, 25 or 29.97 fps for 4K, Quad HD, 2K or 1080p material, 25 or 29.97 for 1080i material and 50 or 59.94 fps for 720p material.
• Proper interlace setting for interlaced material: for 50Hz and 59.94 Hz regions, HD interlaced material will be top field first.
• Proper sound settings: Format > Linear PCM, Channels > Stereo (L R) or 2 Discrete Channels or 8 Discrete Channels, Rate > 48.000 kHz, Sample size > 24 bits, and Little Endian. If you have additional operational questions about the Ki Pro Quad, please feel free to contact AJA Technical Support via phone or email. February 26, 2014 at 10:49 pmHi,
I Have contacted AJA technical support, who have worked very hard in finding a solution, but it appears the Ki Pro is VERY fussy with its ProRes files. Using Final Cut Pro works every time, but we use Apple Compressor (4.1.1), we managed to get it to work for a few days, but for some reason it no longer generates ProRes files that work with the Quad !?? We’ve deduced that the Quad will only supports ProRes files it generates, or ones that have been created using the Apple Core Media Codec ! Compressor appears to use Appple Quicktime Codec, which for some reason isn’t supported by the Quad, or unknowingly unsupported. What has complicated support progress is that AJA support s Apple Compressor (4.1.1) outputs files using Core Media codec all the time, but couldn’t get it to generates files the same as ours !? they even built a clean Mac machine with Compressor (no FCPX installed) and it still generated files that worked !?
