  • Keyspan problem with UVW-1400

FCP is great and working flawlessly with our DSR-25. Now I want it to work with our beta deck, a UVW-1400.

As I was advised I purchased a Keyspan USA-19HS. The UVW deck uses a 25 pin connector so I found a 9 to 25 pin adapter left over from an old Media 100 installation. Because both of the connectors have nuts on them I had to purchase a RS-232 male to female cable with screws on each end. So mechanically this should work, right?

I’ve verified that the computer is seeing the Keyspan adapter in Keyspan Serial Assistant. I’ve turned on both RS-422 Deck Control and Key Serial under Network Port Configurations. I’ve tried every possible setting in FCP’s “device Control Pre-sets” (where I’m using a copy of “Black Magic NTSC 29.97” to set the device and specify RS-232 (UVW-1400), Still FCP tells me “No Communication” with the deck (and yes I’ve switched it to ‘remote’ from ‘local’). I’ve also experimented with powering on the computer and deck in different orders.

And just in case this matters, this deck is from our Media 100 installation where it communicates perfectly through Pipeline MediaDeck Pro and another 3rd party serial port.

For what it’s worth, the LED on the adapter is flashing rapidly.

Okay, Bovines. WHAT am I missing? Something hardware-related, software-related, system-related? Or simply stupid me-related?

    Thanx!

Do you have the latest drivers installed?
    Did you do a restart?

I’ve worked with serial a bit for some scientists who want to talk to various devices. The problem is often the cable not being correct for the devices involved.

The Keyspan device has the following pin assignments according to the tech documentation:
    male DB9
    12 3 45
    6789

    1, DCD, Data carrier detect
    2, RX, receive data
    3, TX, transmit data
    4, DTR, data terminal ready
    5, GND, Ground
    6, DSR, Data Set Ready
    7, RTS, Request to send
    8, CTS, clear to send
    9, RI, ring indicator

According to one reference I found, the UVW-1400 is

    1, GND, ground
    2, txd, transmit data
    3, rxd, receive data
    4, rts, ready to send
    5, cts, clear to send
    6, dsr, data set ready
    7, gnd, ground
    8-19 not used
    20, DTR, data terminal ready
    21-25 not used

So at the most basic, a cable that takes 2 to 2, 3 to 3, and 5 of the 9 pin to 7 of the 25 pin might work, if no hardware handshaking is going on.

Check this with a multi-meter, and you’ll know if you have a chance with the cable setup you have.

I would try Pipeline Digital or Addeda Electronics to get a cable that works if you can’t get yours going. It seems that you are doing RS232 9 pin to RS232 25 pin communication.

    Nick:
Sorry I can’t help with your problem. But…I see you made the switch. So did I. When you get a chance, e-mail me off forum.

THANK YOU, Steven! (And thanx, too to Kevin for his initial questions.)

Works like a CHAMP with FCP. Yet oddly enough the Black Magic Deck Control software, which Black Magic told me to use for testing, only sends the eject command to the deck. Must be something I need to set in its prefs. Then again I don’t use the Deck Control software I use FCP, so I’m home free.

    THANX!!
