  • KEYLIGHT Problems! May be the worst shot Bluescreen ever!

Was wondering if someone might be able to assist me with some probs keying with Keylight. This is a badly shot footage issue and not a KEYLIGHT prob which is great plug in.

Basically I have a range of shots that are not lit properly for keying. I’m trying to make the best of things but I’ve already spent a couple of days with KEYLIGHT and the results aren’t great.

I’ve uploaded some frames and a QT. If anyone has some time to check them out and give me some advice that would be really appreciated.

The shot I have is of full body shot of 3 African Warriors holding thin spears and shields against a bluescreen. The footage was shot on PAL DIGI BETA and digitise at 10bit using FCP and a KONA. The badly lit areas are:

    – Floor – Heavy shadows cast
    – Shadows on body
    – Lots of spill on bodies and on Shields
    – The spears are quite thin and are bascially now a dark blue colour and almost completely disappear.

    What I’ve done:

    – Deinterlaced footage through AE interpret footage settings [High quality edges]. Is this the best way?
    – Masked the edges to lose the rigs
    – KEY 01: A general overall keylight with a AE Matt choker
    – KEY 02: An inner key based on key one to solidify the inner areas of the foreground
    – KEY 03: A separate key on the tops of the spears
    – KEY 04: A separate key on the bottoms of the spears
    – KEY 05: A separate key on the shields

All of the above use the AE matt choker to soften the aliased edges with pretty average results.

If anyone has time to give me some help with KEYLIGHT’S settings or even just a quick look at the original shot to say if there is no chance of keying this that would be great. I’m a bit unclear of which way I should go with despilling, alpha bias and balance.

    Cheers

If all else fails you could roto. Lets look at the original if you have sometime to post it. Just need a still frame.

I tried the download twice and it only had these two files (Warriors Bow 01 w shadow001.mov and WARRIORS KEYED.psd)

The quicktime shows my first attempt. The PSD file has 3 high rez tiffs [before and after] in layers. Let me know what you think.

I’m guessing that what you need to do is play with the screen matte settings. ANdrew Kramer has a great tutorial on basic color keying with Keylight here:

    https://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/new_page_wrapper.cgi?forumid=2&page=https://www.creativecow.net/articles/kramer_andrew/colorkey/index.html

If you like it, you may want to get his DVD called Serious FX and Compositing which will help you if you are new to keylight or are looking foer ways to improve on what you already know. You can find that here.

Doh! My fault. I just opened it with preview. Now I see the layers.

I’l try my hand at the key settings. In general I’d say that everything from the ankles up looks keyable. You may have to roto the shields back in. I’m guessing that you’ll need to mask out the floor but take a copy of the masked area and use it to put the shadows back on to the background layer.

Also there are matte edge settings right in Keylight you might not need the extra matte choker.

    HI Aharon

Have checked outy his tute which is great…as are most of yours that I’ve seen. Does he have an advanced KEYLIGHT tute in that series?…will have a look.

Have gone back and forth through the manual as well but can’t seem to get a result much better than the example I posted. Everything I seem to do [like reducing the screen strength so I have more room to play with in the SCREEN MATT seetings] just seems to send me back to where I was.

I have a number of these to do in a short time and am worried it might be all roto.

Tony I have used a separate key for the shields which seemed to help. Thanks for having a look. I haven’t had many nights in bed before 3am for weeks now so your help is much appreciated!

He’s asking for the original UNKEYED footage. He wants to try and key it himself and see what he can do.
