Is it possible to do what I would describe as an inverse key namely,

instead of keying out everything that is say green, to remove every thing which is not green and leave the green elements in a scene.

i.e inverse the keyed out area ?

If you make a normal key, in other words key out the green, then use that as an inverse alpha matte that should achieve what you want.
