KeyLight Noise
Posted by Robert Gilbert on February 3, 2024 at 3:51 pmPeace to All! I did a KeyLight ++ on these actors and I was so pleased with the results…until I added the background. Yipes! Could someone please tell me why I’m getting this noise between the actors and her hair looks too soft and clumpy? By now I’m sure you can see I’m no pro. Could you please help me with this? Thanks!

February 3, 2024 at 4:37 pmp.s. I had previously happily removed “jumping spot” artifacts by placing a copy of the keyed clip above the same keyed clip, this however worsened the other noise I mentioned between the actors and around her hair, etc. Here’s how it looks with only one keyed clip. The noise on the sky is less but the spots on his head are now visible.
The green screen removal was made with 4K Canon footage in Ae on a MSI laptop. Thanks!

February 4, 2024 at 9:09 pmThanks, Eric. I did everything Jason Levine said in his great tutorial and it was a joy to see how well the separate hairs looked on the alpha export. I can try again.
Do you or anyone know where that noise between the actors came from? The rest of the sky looks nice.

February 5, 2024 at 4:36 pmin key light, you can view ‘final’ or other options.. one of them is source matte. Look at this, it should be a greyscale image, mainly black and white, where your subjects are. If there is any grey this will introduce noise. Alter the black and white points in the settings, as well as other sliders, screen gain etc, to get a good a key as possible. Then use key cleaner and matte refine, or what ever its called. Finding the right balance with all this stuff can be tricky, but as long as the green screen is quality enough, you should be able to retain hair detail and remove noise

February 5, 2024 at 6:23 pmGreat tips from Andy!
Honestly there are times when you need to combine other tools such as masking/tracking.
That noise is def not on the background sky.
Blonde/Red hair is tricky in post.

February 5, 2024 at 8:54 pmI would appreciate any tips on red hair. It does seem to be fighting the blue background. Thank you, Eric!

February 6, 2024 at 12:17 amBTW, I need to key out this green screen on two takes (so that’s two clips from the same camera angle). Could I do that with just one precomp, or would I need to make two comps for that? Naturally there will be a jump cut between the two takes and I don’t know if that will cause a mess or not. As you can see, I’m rather new to After Effects and I wasn’t able to find the answers online. Thank you for your help!
