I’m having a difficult time keying 15 blue screen rushes that were given to me.
The blue screen was pretty even, but around the subject is a very dark halo, which looks like a 5 pixel-thick shadow. It could be the lens they used or just poor lighting, but I have to key it out and pull a matte quick.
I am using Keylight in After effects. I have tried also using a luma key, switching channels and nothing seems to get rid of the near-black edge around the subject.
I have shrunk the edge in Keylight and blurred it but had to do it so intensely that the key was eating away other parts of the subject.

Is there any way to resolve this without animating garbage mattes?

Believe it or not, the rushes were digitised using jpeg compression!
Thanks for advice. I will try two instances of Keylight. Looks like I wont be able to avoid masking though as there is a lot of near black in the dark blue halo. I tried turning up blue saturation, but the blue spill on his shirt (and not just on the edges – all over) is being keyed out.

I wish there were postproduction people supervising these shoots.

At least it keeps me in work.

    Thanks again Dave.

    Steve.
