Anyone who can help please do. I am embarking on a project where keying will be the most important thing. I have a green cloth backdrop that is lit very well. I’m shooting with a Sony DSR-450 in DVCAM mode. Unfortunately due to financial reasons I will be limited to the keyers in FCP and Motion.

I have been doing a bunch of tests prior to the shoot and have found that the edges and actual key tend to look best when shot interlaced with a 1/125 shutter.

Everything I’ve read has said use progressive when shooting green screen. However I don’t seem to get as crisp of an edge when I shoot in 24P (lot of stair stepping and spill suppressor needed.) Is it possible that since I’m shooting digitally and not on film, being interlaced actually helps cover up the lack of resolution needed for a great key.

Let me know what you have experienced. Thanks.

You are processing DV codec. It’s terrible. It’s not going to matter much how you shoot this, it’s still gonna blow when you examine the individual pixels.

If you will not acquire a better keyer, one designed to handle DV’s inherent flaws, then you will need to master your tools, not the shooting situation. The best keying is iterative; many keyers, filters, chokers, and masks applied to the same layer or copies of the same layer.

Your production framerate is determined by your release medium, generally, not the keying utility at your disposal.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
