I’m keying something in FCP 5.1.4, and I’ve used the 3way color corrector to heighten the saturation on the green screen background, and then I went in with the blue-green keyer and selected green and got the key pretty close. Then I used the spill suppresor to turn the edges, which were previously green, black. No amount to tinkering, however, can seem to get the key just right. Even if I use the edge featherer, there’s always chunks of black on the outline, or it cuts into the figure. I don’t know too much about the chroma keyer, luma key, or color smoothing- 4:2:2 or 4:1:1. Are any of these the answer? I don’t know if it makes a difference, but the footage is 720p shot on a JVC GY-HD110U. Thanks!

Which means it’s HDV and full of nasty compression artifacts. You definitely want to apply the 4:1:1 color smoother before you do any further manipulation.

I would look up Chroma Key in your FCP Help menu as I seem to recall they walk you through the process very well there. You might also want to search through the Tutorials here on the Cow. I know this topic has been covered in After Effects, not sure on FCP, but certainly if you watch the After Effects version, you’ll be able to translate some of that to FCP.
