Please help me!!! Iv bin searching the net for a solution to my problems. I bin mailing everybody, with no luck(returns).
My question, is how to add keyframes in the timeline and then add a effects from the preset in that frame. And a couple of frames later, a new effect from the presets??.
I hope this makes any sence.. I mean if i have a 5 min of raw footage, and i wánt to add different effects from the preset in differents frames, is this possible??
Please Help me.. Please advice!!!

February 5, 2008 at 8:38 pmSelect the layer, then edit>split layer where you want the new effect to be applied. Apply the new effect to the new layer.
Otherwise you’ll have to keyframe all the effect values to zero when you don’t want to see the effect … if you just use one layer. Cumbersome and confusing. -

February 7, 2008 at 2:07 pmallright thanks a bunch.. This did the trix, well allmost..
After i split the layers and applied an effect to the top layer. How do i reduce the effect lenght at the end of that layer, before the second effect shows??
I mean the effect are different. Some effect shows only at the first frames and others are there until the hole clip are finished.
So let´s say after i split a layer in 3 piecies because i want 3 different effects. And i apply a effect to the top layer, but this effect is an one that continues on the layer until the clip has run out.. How do i make thoose effect only last for a few seconds or just simply stop, so that the clip appears normal again before the second effect is executed.
Thanks for the quick answer. This is really awesome forum

February 7, 2008 at 3:01 pmWell then, it might be a better idea to apply all effects to one layer and keyframe the values of the effects to zero. Sometimes, if you have keyframes for an effect and you want to reset the effect to zero at some point, you can move to that point then hit “reset” for that effect in the effects palette.
At any rate, you now have options.

My first approach were spliting layer´s. How do i set up keyframes for one layer, and when i dont want the effect at that time in the timeline, where do i set the effect to zero??
Sorry for me being so noob. But hey, one day it may be me giving advice 🙂 ( hardly) lol…

February 7, 2008 at 4:19 pmI’m talking about Effects that show up in the Effects palette (F3). If you don’t want to see an Effect, the property that you set to zero depends on the Effect.
Sometimes it is the “blend with original” property, which you would set to 100% to make the Effect disappear. Sometimes you hit “reset” at the top of the effect settings in the Effect palette.
I can’t be sure until I know exactly which effects you have in your comp.

February 7, 2008 at 6:49 pmYou say that in the effect panel, the property for that effect can be set to zero depending on the Effect. Where exactly?
And why is the reset option or the way you set the value to zero, not the same for every effect??
Ok here is an exsample:
I made a short clip, about 16 seconds. Only one layer. I applyied the effect “Magnify” from the preset to the layer. Now this effect is running in the entire clip until the clip is over. How can i stop this effect in the middle of the clip? And also how will I add a new effect on the same layer?
Your help is much appreciated SR 🙂

February 7, 2008 at 7:10 pmAs I wrote, it’s different for different effects. Sometimes a value has to be set to 0, sometimes to 100%, sometimes to 1. Some effects have a ray length (reset is zero) and some magnify things (reset is 100%). Some effects don’t allow resetting. They do different things, so they work differently.
You can’t stop an effect, you can only set a value to something that appears “unaffected”. In your Magnify example, you’d set the Magnification to 100%.
Now, the way to do this immediately (not gradually) is to use hold keyframes — your last keyframe before the “stop” should be a hold keyframe. For example, if you wanted to keyframe the Magnify from 150% to 200% then stop, you’d set three keys: 150, 200 and 100. The 200 should be a hold keyframe. Try this out on a layer with only one effect so things don’t get confused.
To add a new effect on the same layer, apply the effect from the Effects menu or the Animation menu if it’s a preset. Now … it will be applied over the whole layer. To make it start at a particular point, you need to figure out which parameter needs to be set to 0/1/100 or whatever, and set that key at the start of the layer. Make that a hold key, so the effect holds at 100% (whatever) until the first key (not 100%) comes in at the point where you want the effect to be noticed.
Don’t think “stop”, think “appear unaffected”. Does that help?

February 7, 2008 at 7:16 pmOk steve..
I found out about setting the first effect from the presets, and i add a keyframe and set its value(in this case maganifycation value) to zero. So far so good.
Now a couple of frames after the keyframe where my first effect stops, i wanted to add another effect, when i did that, the new effet just overlapsed the old one, and it starts from the beginning of the clip!! How can o add a keyframe to the new effect??
HELP!!!!!!!!!

February 7, 2008 at 7:55 pmOkay…
Yes it defintly helped out thinking like that, that it dont stop but “fades down” sort of speak..
Now i see the picture of it and the downsides. Because when i add a effect, lets say from the “image- speciel effect” and i choose the “Bad tv 3 weak”, it has multiple effect attached to it. So i would have to set all of its values to zero, and then when i found the time area where i want the effect to “appear”, i will have to reset all its values again.. 🙁
This is not a effective way, if you working with one layer and add 3-4 differents effect to it… Is this the simplest way??
Would you do it the same way?

February 8, 2008 at 11:07 amHi, using Steves ‘spliting layer’recommendation, why don’t you split your original layer where you want the effect to start and then split the resulting layer where you want the effect to end.
Then only apply your ‘Bad TV 3 weak’ effect to the relevant layer. One piece of advice i have found so valuable is to get into the habit of always naming your layers correctly.Hope this helps
