  • Keyboard shortcut to modify reel?

Posted by Trevor Asquerthian on January 30, 2011 at 11:40 pm

Before I consolidate I want to enter a unique reel name (copied from clip name mainly) …. which I would like to automate with Butler (a macro programme) but…

I can’t figure out a way of accessing the reel entry with the keyboard…

Any answers / tips / tricks?

(QTChange isn’t working for me on FW drives for some reason, and I’d rather do it within FCP as some reel names can span a number of clips.)

    hey, Trevor,
nice to meed a fellow Macro user!

you need to get the clip to open into the Viewer widow,
from there, you can open up the Modify > Timecode window.

you’ll need to assigns Modify > Timecode a shortcut.
in the Customise Keyboard window this command is (slightly confusingly) just called “Timecode”

once you get that window open you DO need to program a mouse click on the “Source Reel” check-box
otherwise the Reel field is non-enterable.

if this is not possible with Butler, or if you prefer to work with Keystrokes only (i do with QuicKeys)
then you should PRE-ENTER a bogus reel# into all your clips that don’t have one.

do this by sorting the clips i the Browser by reel. (or maybe using the search tool in the browser?)
find al the clips with no reel.
enter you bogus reel name (such as NO REEL) to one clip,
then right click in the reel column for all the others and choose the new NO REEL name.

if you do this, then the Reel field will be accessible in the Modify > Timecode window.
you need to Shift Tab back to it from the TC feld.

    cheers,
    nick

Why does the macro not work?

And, QTchange ‘should’ work on FWdrives just fine, something else is wrong. (Perhaps a long pathname, or the files are locked)

However, be afraid of using QTchange on an already edited show.
    You might render stuff offline…

    Great, thanks Nick.

The clips mostly have ‘test’ or ‘NoName’ as their reel number already!

For anyone interested the macro is: (with clip selected in browser and ‘Timecode…’ assigned to Ctl+Alt+8).

CMD+9 – to get clip details
    100ms delay
    CMD+C – to copy name
    100ms delay
Escape – to leave clip details
    100ms delay
CTL+ALT+8 – to modify timecode (REASSIGNED KEY)
    200ms delay
TAB – to move to reel name
    100ms delay
CMD+V – to paste clip name
    20ms delay
    RETURN – to modify timecode
    20ms delay
Arrow Down – to move to next clip, ready for the next adjustment.
