keyboard for new user
Posted by Bob Cole on August 24, 2005 at 11:23 pmI’m migrating from another NLE to PP.
I’ve read that the Bella keyboard/shuttle knob is recommended. Any alternatives I should look at? Cooper?
And… without violating the NDA, will PP 2 make a dedicated keyboard from PP 1.5 obsolete?

August 24, 2005 at 11:56 pmActually, the abilities of the Premiere Pro user to change their keyboard configuration at will, made all keyboards obsolete at the same time they made them irrelevant, as well as still valuable. All of the above.
If Premiere Pro 2.0 changes something, feel free to change it back.

August 25, 2005 at 12:00 amTake a look at a ‘LogicKeyboard’ for Prem Pro.
I enjoy using one and have also added some custom shortcut keys.
It is a very well built solid unit BTW.

August 25, 2005 at 1:49 amThanks Steven and Craig. I noticed the Logic unit is marketed with a separate “Shuttle Pro” while the Bella keyboard has a built-in shuttle. Any preferences?
Another somewhat related question regarding programming the keyboard: coming from discreet edit* the keystrokes I use most often are H (number) and T (number) for trimming by a number of frames. Aside from “trim backward/forward by one frame/large trim offset” Alt-(shift)-(right or left) is there any keystroke combo which allows numerical trimming?

August 25, 2005 at 2:44 amI only use the keyboard so could not say anythng about the shuttle Pro.
Your Keyboard question:
Your Head (H) & Tail (T)+ numerical input trimming is not available as such.(as far as I know anyway)I use “T” (for MatchFrame which I read as Trim) when the clip is selected in the timeline and then use “I” or “O” which adjusts in or out(or a numerical +/- for frames in a timecode window).
The “T” opens clip in the source window and there are a few options.
Ctrl T opens clip in a Trim Window which is another method with even more options.

August 25, 2005 at 10:00 amHi Bob,
As a fellow ex-edit user, I use the basic Bella keyboard and a Contour ShuttlePro jogger for my left hand. Works really well, much better then the combo Bella jog/KB which makes you lift your hand from the mouse to use the jog wheel. You really need a color-coded KB. I use some edit shortcuts, but I mostly learned the new PPro ones.

August 25, 2005 at 8:53 pmThank you for the keystroke and keyboard and shuttle tips. I have them on order and think that they’ll help me get more comfortable with this new-to-me program.
I guess if I set the large trim offset to “3” I will be able to trim just as fast as with edit*, by using the “3” and the “1” frame trims in succession. And maybe PP 2 will bring in numerical keystroke trims….
I’m struck by the seemingly unnecessary distinction between insert/overlay edits and rolling/ripple edits in PP.

August 25, 2005 at 10:15 pmBob,
You do have to work a little harder to make the Premiere worflow faster, but I’m pretty quick now after nine months switch from edit. I did some KB mods like TAB to go to next target edit point and SHIFT-TAB for the previous edit and modded a lot of functions to the left side of the KB like ADD DEFAULT VIDEO/AUDIO TRANSITION to ALT-A and ALT-Z. I wish the tabbing was more intuitive.

August 26, 2005 at 1:55 amThe biggest function (capability) I miss is the ability to be able to “focus” from the Source Monitor to the Timeline (or the Program Monitor) using a keyboard shortcut.
I would like to be able to PLAY my timeline immediately after insert / overlaying from the Source Monitor. The only way I can do this is to focus the relevant window with a mouse click.
I have put in a feature request.
