    In FCP, you can preview your timeline in full screen on the cinema display. Command F12. I was purusing the Preference in AE and found something that sounded similar. I clicked “Cinema Display and the screen went to black just like in FCP. But I can’t figure out how to undo that. I’m now guessing that preference is for a dual display situation.

    I figured out how to fix it. I hit F10 and which the AE window was highlighted, QUICKLY hit the menu at the top “After Effects”. then I was able to get to all the menus, including preferences.
