Keeping that Shift-F (show masterclip) functionality from one project to another
Posted by Anders Haavie on August 31, 2005 at 8:09 amShow Masterclip doesn’t work after I copy timelines and footage from one project to another. Major pain in the ass for the project we are working on now. Does anyone have any ways around ?? Please help out. This is last major obstacle for our avid editors to like FCP 🙂

August 31, 2005 at 11:41 amI have the same problem…
And it happens in the AVID TOO! If a bin was digitized in another project, then brought into the one I am working in, well, OK, it will show the master clip, but the bin, it will say it isn’t there when it is.
FCPs media manager (the part of the application responsible for what you are asking about) needs MAJOR work. While Avid was built around the Media tool and organizing media databases, FCP was not…

Do you know about the “reveal in finder” function? Highlight a clip and then “right click” on it to show the pull down menu. One of the choices is called “reveal in finder”. This will open a “finder” window showing you the path to where that clip lives on your drives. From that you can then “pull” that clip into the project if necessary. This is the “workaround” that you’re looking for. As far as I know, even AVID can’t do this! So round up your “Avid centric” troops and show them how to find their long lost clips. One of the biggest differences between Avid and FCP is the way that media is organized. AVID= Bins. FCP=Mac file structure. We use this to our advantage by networking all of our systems together. Anyone who needs to see the original media has access to it from the finder. You don’t even need FCP to view it. QT player is fine. In fact, you don’t even need a Mac. QT player on Windoze works too.

Nah.. Not really. We have quite big and complex projects with lots of footage. It’s very nice to find out which bin a clip is from when you see it in the timeline.
I totally agree that it’s great to have reveal in finder function, but this is not the solution I am looking for.

August 31, 2005 at 5:22 pmThe application simply does not work the way you would like it to work. New instances of media in a new project cannot be linked to each other. There is no data base for that.
Rather than copying or dragging from one project to another, if you duplicated the project and deleted the the material you didn’t need from it, reveal in finder would work correctly. Bit of a workaround, but if that functionality is necessary to you that’s the only way to do it that I know of.

August 31, 2005 at 5:34 pmOkeyokey.
But does anyone know if this works in Avid. If it doesn’t work in Avid either, I am home free. As I have understood you correct Shane, Avid will give you match frame but not show you the correct bin when the bin was copied from another project.

August 31, 2005 at 7:19 pmHit just the “F” key to put the match frame into the viewer then drag the clip from the viewer to the browser in your new project. Not totally elegant but do-able.

September 1, 2005 at 11:43 amSince we’re talking about match frame….have you noticed that if you try to match frame by selecting the clip in the TL V2 or higher, it doesn’t work all the time. It works sometimes but sometimes it will still match frame V1 and I will have to use the autoselects to match frame higher video track.
And when it does work, it doesn’t work on the first frame. So say you have the same exact length clips on V1 and V2. If you put your playhead on the 1st frame, select clip in V2 and match frame – it will match frame V1. BUt if you move the playhead to frame 2, then it will properly match frame the clip in V2.
WHAT’S UP WITH THAT?!?

September 1, 2005 at 2:21 pmWorks fine here…perhaps all of your AutoSelects are in fact, selected….highlight the AutoSelect of the track you wish to match frame and it should work every time, and on the head frame.
