I am trying to decide if I should used an external analog component to SDI converter or IO to get betacam component in & then upconvert to HD. Does the video have to pass through the K2 card during the digitize process or does K2 magically convert media in the timeline on the fly like the sadly departing Cinewave. I would prefer IO if it would work. I could also wait for Black Magic Studio but it only converts down, not up.

    Hi-

You have a few options, but either way, the KONA 2 will upconvert on ingest, or playout, so you can upconvert SD video to HD files on disk, or playout SD files on disk to HD video…very flexible and unique.

The Io with the new free Io Control Panel software is a good choice if you need to upconvert on the way in to HD files on disk. This way, you take in your analog SD video and audio material, send it out as SD SDI and AES (or embedded), and feed that to KONA 2 which will upconvert to HD on the way in.

If you wish to upconvert SD files on the way out, an Io LA is a good choice. You would digitize through the Io LA, and then upconvert the playout through KONA 2. There are no file compatibility issues, as we use Apple’s codecs on both products (except for our Dual-Link 4:4:4 codec in KONA 2).

So, you have multiple ways to use the upconvert feature of the KONA 2. It is always realtime, configurable to inputs and/or outputs, and is codec agnostic as it is hardware-based, and works in 1080 and 720 formats (same as our downconverter). And the best part, this feature is available NOW in our shipping hardware and driver!

Please call us if you wish to discuss this further! (530) 274-2048, or sales@aja.com

    Thank you,

Is there any video delay going through the IO for convertion? In my experience there has been a possible single frame delay going through an A to D, D to A converter.

    Thanks
